25/3/2024 12:16 | Let's see if there is a rebuttal from APIKUR over this latest Iraqi statement. | pittcock
25/3/2024 12:15 | "The slow "unpicking" of that Western-formulated constitution is now in full swing; how far it may progress and what form its replacement may take remains to be seen." Makes no difference. Under international law the PSCs and the Kurds constitutional right to sign them will be judged against the laws and constitution that were in effect at the time of their signing. And that means that the PSCs are legal and valid until they expire in 2043 or whatever it is. | habshan
25/3/2024 12:08 | The basic problem is that The Constitution and the whole concept of Federalism was essentially forced down Iraq's throat - by the USA and coalition partners. It was never fully accepted by Iraq and the various component parts have never been fully integrated into Iraq governmental structures. The slow "unpicking" of that Western-formulated constitution is now in full swing; how far it may progress and what form its replacement may take remains to be seen. The Huffing and the Puffing is not confined solely to Iraq. | broadford bay

25/3/2024 11:44 | (Arcadian) - "For us though it is whether The Prime Minister will go to Washington and make lots of promises as to the future full of agreements, optimism reviews etc" I think that the reasoning is that some meaningful movement by the ICG must be in place before Sudani is officially received in Washington. | punter26

25/3/2024 11:33 | Mohammed A. Salih @MohammedASalih - Mar 22 (Senior Fellow @FPRI;Politics,Media "Good opportunity at a critical moment for the White House to persuade PM Sudani on reaching a lasting deal with Kurdistan that will be in the interest of financial & security stability for both sides. The USG has more than enough leverage to get this done IF it wants to. Ceng Sagnic@cngsgnc "I don't think (Sudani) needs to be persuaded. He will not have the power or tools to implement it even if he had the will. I agree on the final point on leverage though." Mohammed A. Salih@MohammedASalih "(Sudani) is not really being engaged because of his immense abilities and powers, but primarily because of being an interlocutor between Washington and Tehran on Iraq affairs. The other reason, of course, is Washington’s perennial obsession with self-formulated moderate-hardliner binaries... ...Nevertheless, he can take serious messages if they’re not mere rhetorical performances, and pass it on to concerned parties. Washington has lots of leverage to get both Baghdad establishment and Tehran to act on Iraq related matters, without the need for firing a bullet." | punter26
