At 6% yield people are calling this an income play. It looks like a trading share to me lately.

'Beer boss balks at 'unprecedented' cost pressures in pub sector'

Sky's Ian King says Fuller, Smith & Turner's chief exec has called time on the burden of extra costs he's been forced to swallow.

Phil, as mentioned on the CNA board at the time, I lost confidence in Conn
at the time of the unexpected £700 million placing.

It made the previous results conference call, which I listened to in its entirety,
sound risible, just IMV.

Summing it up at MAB today...

Phil Urban, chief executive, said: ‘The consumer environment is changing, with people eating out less frequently but spending more when they do make the decision to go out.
‘In addition, although restaurant supply growth has steadied over the last year the market remains highly competitive and, as a result, levels of discounting appear to be increasing in some segments.’

And as for Conn at CNA :-)

.... last year received a near 40 per cent rise in his pay package to nearly £4.2m.

Philanderer - Maybe this case demonstrates once and for all how useless brokers tips tend to be, and why they should always be taken with a large pinch of salt. Looks like the notion of brewery stocks being a defensive play is another myth finally exposed.

Ian, non exec buys can be interesting, as they don't often benefit
from cheap options.

I attempt to rule out anything that looks token, and also usually ignore single director
purchases.

As an example on CNA, Conn's 100k buy looked insignificant in the context
of his salary package and wealth, as I mentioned on the CNA board at the time.
Highly subjective judgement admittedly.

I did say "with certain exceptions". There are certainly signals from some Director buying which are significant - another example was when several Enterprise Inns' Directors sold a proportion of their shares and bought the bombed-out corporate bonds - but the idea that Directors should dip in for relatively insignificant amounts at times like this just smacks of a rather feeble price-support exercise to me and tends to send the wrong signal IMHO.

Bend1pa : It is not curious that JDW has bucked the trend of you consider that it has had 147,000 IPhone (alone) apps downloaded since June enabling free table service, none of the other players have this technology...Jeffian : you overlook Big Tim M who bought Spoons shares 10+ days running this July, taking his holding UP from 30% & notably at £2 less than today's price...

With certain exceptions (e.g. Brian Souter's £13m buy back into Stagecoach when it was on its knees) I think Directors' share buys are a bit of puffery which are as likely to signal desperation as confidence. The Directors are there to run the company, not be investors, and as EI says above, are usually plied with fresh shares through their 'incentive schemes' anyway.

Thought the drop below £5 would be 2018 as mentioned,
we got there a few weeks early.

Not one single BOD purchase (ex options) during this dramatic decline.

Sp in freefall this am.The way it's is faring does suggest GSK may be heading for the rocks. It's curious that JDW is about the only pub stock that's defied the trend. Also Fullers haven't been too badly hit either yet . So maybe the problem has a lot more to do with GSK and their management, huge level of debt, etc than the pub industry in general. It's looking likely the div will go.

Well EIG was down 97% at one point! Gradual (very) recovery, but from a much lower base. However, some positives that might read across in terms of beer sales, property values, like-for-likes, growth in tenanted estate etc.

I note that Greene King are scheduled to announce Interims on same day as Marstons announce Finals. Should be an interesting day.

Interested to see results here and may be tempted then, or may be not!.
