The point of a divi, assuming it is affordable, is that it gives shareholders a reason to hold through bad times as well as good. A recent example is VNET, which supplies the beer monitoring equipment to GKN, MARS and many others, who maintained their barely-covered dividend through the period of upheaval in the pub industry and have restructured themselves into an integrated information-monitori Bearing in mind that most fund managers would be thrilled to achieve 5-7% compound growth, a good divi achieves that without worrying about the share price.
