£13.99 for a three course Christmas dinner! Can't go wrong with that.

I'm positive they will have a good Christmas, more people are choosing to spend money on experiences, lets hope they chose to experience a Greene King pub.

GNK has warned about rising cost pressures and pressure on disposable spending for more than a year, there is nothing mysterious imv.
WTB update just underscores that.

Is this the case of high debt and dividend at risk?

Hi Phil, just noticed as looking at MARS, not brave enough to buy
ahead of tomorrow's update. Have to be honest and say I thought under £5 (if it did come) would be 2018.

Edit, bought a very small amount of MARS just before the close.

What may be nasty imv are some sector debt levels with
margins now under pressure.

The share price starting with a £4 would no longer surprise me,

A few lines from Berenberg's reasoning...

'Pub-picking Berenberg upgrades Wetherspoons, downgrades Greene King, Marston's '

...Berenberg moved Greene King on to 'sell', even though shares have declined 15% since 8 September: "With LFL growth likely to remain under pressure, margins declining, and leverage set to remain stubbornly high, we see few reasons to own the shares."

If MARS cut the dividend again, you can wave goodbye to the share price forever. The City haven't forgiven them for last time yet.

The point of a divi, assuming it is affordable, is that it gives shareholders a reason to hold through bad times as well as good. A recent example is VNET, which supplies the beer monitoring equipment to GKN, MARS and many others, who maintained their barely-covered dividend through the period of upheaval in the pub industry and have restructured themselves into an integrated information-monitoring platform managing smart machines, dealing with contactless payment etc. Shares now recovering strongly and it hasn't hurt to receive a 6% yield while waiting.

Bearing in mind that most fund managers would be thrilled to achieve 5-7% compound growth, a good divi achieves that without worrying about the share price. A share which is going nowhere and doesn't pay a divi isn't worth holding.
