Funnily enough I received an email from my brokers last week.

A pharma company I was invested in delisted three or four years ago.

There were no financial issues. It had simply switched to being an investment company.

Anyway to cut to the chase.

Another unlisted company was buying it.

Was I prepared to accept the cash offer now or wait until the buyers acquired 90% and the offer was unconditional?

I said I would take the cash now.

If the co' itself isn't bankrupt it must have a value whether listed or not so why would you be able to treat its shares as worthless? Just becuase they're not easily tradeable doesn't mean their owners will give them away does it?

EC, have you any personal experience of shorting a company that has delisted that can counter the "most cfd/spreadbet firms will settle at zero" statement of a short trader with the gravitas of WShak?

EC, do you understand the premise that spread betting firms can offer equal long and short bets to customers without having an underlying stake in the market?

The price at which bets are closed are the same for longs and shorts minus the spread. As long as the positions balance, no trade in the underlying instrument is needed.

Given that, what the hell is your last point trying to get across?

EC,

Sure, that post of GG doesn't explicitly state 0p but I think he and others did state as much elsewhere.

You made the same point about the bit from WShak I also quoted. Here's more from him:

"just wait until the shares are removed from CREST and most cfd/spreadbet firms will settle at zero.

Now, I know WShak to be a vastly experienced and substantial short trader. I believe him.

Henchard, Sheep-Herder,

Who do you think is on the other side of the trade if shorts are closed out at 0p? Not longs, since the price has not been near 0p.

In fact, any difference between the suspension price and 0p would be a gift from the spread betting company.

Good luck with that.

Henchard,

Nowhere in your quote does it suggest that CTAG paid out at 0p.

CTAG didn't go bust. Suspended at something like 5p. Delisted and spread bet firms settled shorts at 0p. No reason for it to be any different in the case of FXI, it's exactly the same scenario.

Re 1895,

You couldn't make this up. Paying out 100% in full means paying out the position at the delisting price, not paying out at 0p. The alternative would be to hold the short open indefinitely.

What a bunch of morons.

That applies to companies that go bust.

This is not the case here.

However some shorts may well have gone bust.

Have a nice day.

Yes, the broker assigns a notional value in your account of zero, because you can't trade it. But that's not the real value...

Veteran shorter WShak has this to say on a delisting:

Removal from CREST normally prompts spread bet companies to pay out 100% in full to those who are short. Normal practise is for those who are paid out by market makers etc, to agree an indemnity in case a miracle happens and the shares come back to ever be worth something. It's a small price to pay to have funds released.

and for a specific example of the spread bet scenario in the case of delisted CTAG

I see that Fusionex's NOMAD has resigned today, so the shares will be suspended tonight, and de-list on 27 Jun 2017. Therefore shareholders only have today to get out. Bizarrely, the share price has strongly rallied in the last few days. This seems inexplicable to me, as the shares will effectively be worthless when they de-list tonight. I doubt UK shareholders will ever see any value from their shares.

Not exactly crystal clear but this is what IG say:

Mbali
Welcome to IG, I’ll just look into your question now.

Mbali
We replicate what is happening in the underlying market. If the share is delisted or suspended it does mean that there will no pricing on it so clients will not be able to trade out of share until it lists again. So usually it will remain on the clients account.

SH
So the bets remain open indefinitely? FXI is moving to a matched bargain facility so I'm assuming you wouldn't be offering bets on that market?

SH
I was under the impression that the stock gets valued at 0p. At least that's how I was treated by a different SB provider previously.

Mbali
If you hold the share and it delists yes. What does tend to happen is when the share delists at a certain price or at 0 we will be able to close the trade at those prices. All this does depend on what happens in the underlying market.

SH
So what defines if the price is 0p or the last trade before it delists?

Mbali
Usually the company itself would declare how much the delisting price is and you then have the opportunity to buy or sell at that price to close trades

SH
OK, thanks.
