I guess you are correct NTV - the risk is to high to be short.

It all looks like it has been a big mistake for the larger holders that paid a huge premium to current levels. Mr K catching a cold on this one.

The VAT people are it seems trying to close Jersey down when it comes to VAT free goods as they are now putting in place regulations that ensure on-line businesses show the amount of labour content and packaging etc etc of each and every parcel shipped.

The Channel islands will come under serious presure from the UK to prevent the advantages that have previously been available.

In fact with the high cost of shipping etc the tables have turned imo.

Beware of internet retailers that are offshore.

Unlucky. The news could have been worse; at least of the rest of the business is doing ok. Greetings Direct was always an odd buy, given it uses a very different model. Their acquisition strategy needs to be stopped imo. It's time for organic development of the business before they wreck this once great company.

Trading Update

Flying Brands, the Jersey-based home shopping group, is today providing an update on its Greetings Direct business further to its announcement on 29 May 2008.

In January 2008 it was announced that the Greetings Direct business would be tested in the United States and substantially extended in Australia. The response rates to the test in June in the United States have been extremely disappointing and the
Board has decided not to invest any more monies in the United States and to close down that operation. The US performance would have delivered economies of scale which will now not materialise. This, combined with the continuing deterioration of the bad
debts and returns metrics in the UK and Australia, means that Greetings Direct will make losses in 2008 with little probability of profits in 2009. As a result of this the Board has decided, with immediate effect, to close down the USA business and to
start a managed closure of the UK and Australia operations over the next 12 months.

The impact of this decision is to impair the full carrying value of the goodwill and intangible assets of Greetings Direct by £11.5m.

In addition the Board considers it prudent to make a provision for future losses and closure costs for the Greetings Direct business of about £1.7m. This is likely to have a negative impact of circa £1.5m on the expected profit before tax
for this financial year.

Trading in the other brands overall is currently in line with our expectations as expressed in our trading update of 29 May 2008.

Grim picture here - just as well waiting until the direction changes or will there be a bid and we could see the business split up and bits sold off imo.

made1686, Ref your post 294

Look at the date I said about GST and look at the share price on the 19.05.08 - the price now makes this better value bearing in mind all factors including zero 10.

Not the best of times for Flying brands with the introduction of GST in Jersey - although most goods are exported their must be extra costs associated with this tax.
