That was pretty impressive. It would be typical England to let us down in the next game, having seen the Germany game as our cup final. However, I dont think this team are like that. There seems a hunger about them.

I know nothing about the Ukraine team, but I guess if we could have picked a team to face in the quarters in Rome, they would have been up there pre tournament.

I think we will play with more freedom away from home, and expect to beat them comfortably.

Shame a few people cannot see a plan even when it works. Southgate for it spot on.

Never in doubt. Well, only for about 89 minutes. A decent performance and we should get to the final. Still doubting Southgate though. Because of? Or in spite of?

I agree Philips and Rice together is not a good combo. He may have discovered by accident that having players like Saka wins you games and opens up the oppo.

If we had a decent replacement for Kane, I'd drop him too. He hasnt been himself in this tournament, and you cant keep your place on history alone.

My team would be

Pickford

mcguire stones

shaw philips grealish mount foden walker

saka rashford

The lesser spotted 2-6-2 formation

But our Head Coach isn't. No good in having a squad of quality players when the manager isn't capable of getting the best out of them.

Southgate does not possess the tactical nous to win games against the top international teams. He will start Phillips and Rice (if fit) together in midfield and even with the occasional runs from Grealish and Saka, there will be no fluid system to connect midfield and the strikers. When you see Southgate looking very studious on the touch line and in conversation with the hapless and over-promoted Steve Holland, then you know we're in trouble.

They'll keep the ball for periods, passing sideways and backwards, before eventually giving it to Pickford for a hopeful, 50/50 punt upfield. What's the point in that?

I can feel a Holland 96 coming on against Germany, I really can.

Our youngsters are quality.

Do you mean moi, Chopper Harris?

Performance against the Czechs an improvement over the previous game but we still lapse into periods of turgid dross, where we appear to lack any imagination.
Good to see Saka running with the ball; we need a lot more of that.

Don’t fancy our chances against Germany, France or Portugal.

I think a recall for Bomber Harris, rather than Michael Owen, might be the best option.

the Germans looked like they had clicked in to gear in their last match against Portugal, and were scoring for fun. if we do get them, and its looking likely, somebody better get in touch with michael owen and see if hes still got his boots...

We will probably play Germany at Wembley, in front of a bigger crowd. This is not the German team of old, but then again we're no Brazil.

We can beat anyone on our day though, with the youngsters playing with freedom and hunger, and I think we will beat Germany or Hungary. I wouldnt fancy us against France, and Portugal wouldnt be easy with whatshisname in the team.

Hello KG

I said 'arguably'.

I sense that if you argued, you'd probably win the argument!

Anyway, we've qualified now, making us one of the best 16 teams in Europe, so thats nice.

Hi JJ, I hope your excuse for yesterday's post was that you'd had a liquid lunch?

Sterling, one of our two best players?!!!

Get rid of Southgate - and free him to join the Labour party such that he can have a daily kneel and preach to us all

I remember the old German teams used to get better in every tournament, prior to usually winning it. Its how you finish that matters, and there were glimpses in the Croatia game of something very good.

On an individual basis, Sterling and Kane, arguably our two best players, have been disappointing so far, but we've all but qualified, and anything can happen in the four knock out games, especially with two? of them at Wembley.

I actually highly rated Southgate as man and as a manager until the Scotland game, where we were second best at everything. Against Scotland. At Wembley. Against Scotland.

Simply not got enough.

However, it was their world cup final, and just another qualification game for us, who I hope have bigger targets.

Up until that game, I believe Southgate has been very impressive, and I'm glad he's got the balls to pick young players.

Best to judge him after the tournament.
