The performance of this share has been extremely negative against a very buoyant FTSE100 which has been scaling new all-time highs.

Down 50% from peak and down significantly on the year.

The problems in the short-haul sector are getting worse and worse.

The POLITICAL RISK associated with the sector due to BREXIT cannot be underestimated.

A very worrying time.

Will post more later.

19bells - I don't know about unexpected (to the public maybe) - unwanted perhaps - Brexit is a reality & priced in for the moment - article 50 certainly came & went with a phut lol. There will be some dirty play during the negotiations and some eventual winners and losers I imagine - always is with a big restructure - trouble is we just don't know until it starts? Oil chart is separate - long term code is USO if you want to plot, but because the change in oil price has been profound I don't think you will see direct correlations - its just known that lower prices are good for airlines as such a large cost for them. GBPEUR is the other factor - there is definite correlation here - so a fwd view on the ccy is important I would say - same triangle situation and waiting for a break. TSI mid line cross is a v good if slightly late weekly indicator - currently hovering around zero. If EURGBP breaks down EZJ will bounce up & vice versa.

Luckymouse - you state 'crashes' but the ones you quote all happen unexpectedly therefore the market bottomed. The theory of brexit is an expected one that plays on the markets weekly but doubt it will happen big because it's already priced in. Relating to easyJet & charts what does it tell you when oil drops in value?

I suspect the first of the significant shorters may have called time on their little gamble and decided to bank their modest profits before they evaporate. Others could well follow.....

Well done 19bells.

I notice one dead head has voted down my post 5759 which related to increases in the number of people flying from UK airport. Some people seem to hate good news.

Year-end traffic results for 2016 continue to trickle into the Airport World office with Heathrow, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Luton and Stansted airports in the UK and Oslo in Norway being the latest to reveal soaring passenger numbers.
Heathrow celebrated 70 years of history as Britain’s front door in 2016 by welcoming a record 76 million passengers (+1%) and 1.5 million tonnes of cargo (+3%).

Birmingham Airport also enjoyed the busiest year in its history handling over 11.6 million passengers (+14.2%) in 2016.

Traffic at Edinburgh Airport hit an all-time high of 12.3 million passengers (+11%) last year.

Also re-writing the record books was Glasgow Airport which handled 9.4 million passengers (+9.4%) in 2016 as it celebrated its 50th anniversary.

It was a smiliar story at London Luton which accommodated 14.5 million passengers, 18.5% more than in 2015 when it smashed all records.
London Stansted retained its status as the UK's fourth busiest gateway courtesy of handling 24.3 million passengers, beating its previous high of 23.8 million set in 2007.

London Luton Airport set the seal on another milestone year when it handled its 33rd consecutive month of double-digit traffic growth in December 2016.

The impressive statistic ensured that it enjoyed another record breaking year and comfirms why London Luton has launched the largest single investment programme in its 79 history to ensure that it is is capable of accommodating 18 million passenegrs yearly by 2020.

London Luton CEO, Nick Barton, enthuses: “In a year when airport capacity has hit the headlines more than ever before, we’ve been working hard to meet demand.

Also " flybe said that is online offering was not what it could be "

The CEO said that she remained very excited about the opportunities of flybe.

Also announced plans to reduce its fleet size.

The squeeze is working !!!

1.

Snippet from today's FT.

See Page 12 for full article and full context within a Brexit-related column:

" Airlines such as RyanAir and EasyJet could lose their European licences under rules requiring majority ownership by EU nationals".

In my opinion, Brexit negotiations will continue for some time to come to add significant ongoing turbulence to an already challenged sector.

2.

Anyone read FlyBe's Pre-Close RNS Statement yesterday which caused FlyBe's share price to slump by a whopping 8%?

Herewith extract from FlyBe's opening paragraph.

Woops....

This points to a very unfavourable operating environment in my view:

"Flybe announces a trading update for its estimated performance for the fourth quarter ending 31 March 2017. The period has been characterised by weak demand in an uncertain consumer environment, together with price competition arising from overcapacity amongst airlines and sharpened price activity from rail operators. Weather related and operational cancellations, as well as industrial action mainly by French air traffic controllers also impacted revenue."

With respect quoting the Motley fool article yesterday is not ramping its nothing more than professional publications like yourself. I recall when MF was negative on Easy you felt it important to quote their articles on a regular basis.

The horror stories of the plight of Ryanair cabin crew is littered across the internet and in my opinion there is trouble ahead.

mastey,

you are misguided if you think that RyanAir can't get all the cheap labour it needs from a better educated workforce than in the UK from so many countries in East Europe.

The Brexit issue is a REAl problem for the airlines. Ryan is very concerned and even more so EasyJet who are expected to announce a new base in Europe next week.

You ignore what Merrills said the other day about the logic or otherwise of their fleet expansion.

I think you should behave and stop ramping. Long-holders have lost 50% since the 1950p peak.

The sector is facing enormous challenges and those are not going away.
