12/5/2012 18:31 | Quitting Kenya If 10-year Deal Annulled De La Rue To Quit Kenya If 10-year Deal Annulled Currency printing firm De La Rue will close its local subsidiary if the Kenya Government does not grant it exclusive rights to print currency, the firm's UK management told MPs on Thursday. De La Rue's UK team flew into the country on Wednesday evening to meet the parliamentary Public Accounts Committee which is investigating the firm's acquisition of a 10-year exclusive contract to print Kenya's currency. Speaking during the hearing, De La Rue's director of market development, Mr Mark Crickett, told the committee that the company's business would be unprofitable if was denied the currency printing deal. "The cancellation would technically undermine and compromise the financial viability of the currency notes printing business, which would make us move the production resources to other countries," said Mr Crickett. In past hearings, Central Bank of Kenya governor Njuguna Ndung'u told the committee that the deals had seen the country lose over Sh2.7 billion to the firm. Asked whether it had lost money due to cancellation of the contracts, De La Rue said it had not suffered any losses. The Central Bank has said in the past that it would not guarantee the firm the business of printing Kenya's currency. De La Rue is also tasked with giving details on a Joint Venture Agreement it is negotiating with the Treasury to see the government own a 40 per cent stake in it, at a cost of Sh665 million. The committee is also probing the circumstances leading to a 10-year exclusive printing contract awarded by the Cabinet to the firm as part of the deal, leading to the joint venture agreement. Dr Khalwale said the committee will issue legal summons to former CBK governor Andrew Mulei and retired CBK secretary John Macharia Gikonyo, who have twice dishonoured calls to appear before it on matters relating to the De La Rue saga.
