They have lost a net 20000 customers in q1 at say £50 profit per customer that's a loss of 1m in profit on the other hand they have cut costs to the amounts of £58 m that's a net gain in profit compared to last year of £57 million ... not exactly terrible news in todays update.

Hi MercerWhilst there is some mileage I'm losing customers where margins are lower but they are losing (or could be losing) c 700k pa, which is not all down to losing lower margin customers, it will hit overall profits. So when Ofgem reduce the cap later this year it's doubtful customers will return to CNA as they have already defected to competitors who clearly offer the same product (and service?) at reduced rates.Losing customers cannot be perceived as good no matter how you spin it IMO.

From HL

"Good cost control means this update isn’t as bad as it could have been, but with a strategic review now pencilled in, the stage is set for a dividend cut. To be fair to Centrica, not all of the challenges are of its own making. There’s not much the group can do about warmer weather reducing customer demand, while the outages hampering the nuclear division came at sites not operated by Centrica. The silver lining is that even if Centrica halved the payout it’d still be paying an above market yield, and there’d probably be room for the dividend to grow from that materially lower base
George Salmon
Equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown"

Guess we knew that, anyway.

It is not that simple that customers can get a better deal elsewhere.

Centrica are obliged to guarantee energy for million of customers.
They sign huge long term supply deals with producers for decades ahead.
Because of size, they can negotiate great long term deals for their customers.

Smaller cowboy operators, even operating from their bedrooms, can buy modest amounts of gas on the spot market and on occasions can offer cheaper deals. There are hundreds of them. They sometimes get caught out and go bust when energy prices are volatile.

There are a number of more serious competitors, Shell being the latest.
Shell are trying to carve a niche will selling renewables, save the planet and all of that.
Shell saving the planet, that is about like Jimmy Saville offering a child minding service.

Customer defections have slowed according to the update, utility companies always have a constant churn of customers leaving or returning, whatsup makes a good point about the quality of customers is just as important as the number of them, it’s all about the Direct Debits Disco Dave.

Why did they lose customers?.......simple, customers could get the same product elsewhere a lot cheaper.UK Energy had a 19% reduction in operating profit last year due to customers going elsewhere.

Conn has made a choice. Keep loss making customers by offering lower rates or letting them go.
He decided to let them go .

It’s the correct decision.

Profit is sanity , turnover is vanity

"The companies that are after more customers lower their prices and surprise surprise go bankrupt"Exactly, but you posted earlier that's how they can get customers back so losing customers isn't an issue.........crazy.
