That's not how I read it but all I say is that when CNA have a bad day dividend hungry investors shouldn't grumble when the price comes down.Amen

I wasn't addressing the merits, or otherwise, of a dividend cut, but whether it was better to have a dividend or use the funds to buy-back shares to produce a Capital gain.

I guess they(utilities companies)have more scope in America to call up prices unlike the UK. I think that's what they call a capitalist society.Hopefully Centrica will benefit.

eezaSorry I didn't answer a question within your response. When a stock starts to rise and there are sellers they will easily get mopped up. Do you honestly think an 8% plus yield is realistic? Let's drop it down to 5% and it will pay dividends in the long run.Can you honestly say your pleased with the management at this current time ?

Totally disagree. Why pay out a dividend when you can't really afford it. Take a look at Glencore, they stopped paying the dividend 3 years ago and now they are back to paying one. The same for AAL and so on. You get an 8% yield and they drop 40% so that doesn't add up. I'll think you'll find one of the reasons why they collapsed back in November was because he DIDN'T announce a proposed dividend cut and that's why there is so much caution around. It also showed a lack of leadership on his behalf. At the end of the day if the management made tough decision rather than just crossing there fingers then you could have the best of both worlds i.e capital gains plus a return of income at a later date.Short term pain long term gain.

Conn should absolutely NOT cut the Dividend. That is s/hlder's reward for loyalty. Dividends are set in stone and once given cannot be taken away. The money is yours to spend as you will. Capital gains are ephemeral - one headline promoting Corbyn to PM and those gains have evaporated. To profit from an increase in share price you have to sell shares, to realise the gain - how does that help the Co? Divi's can be re-invested if so wished.
Most s/hlders in this Co are here for the Income.
Don't shoot yourself in the foot, Conn.

I'm not sure they would collapse. I think the market is anticipating a cut but this should have been addressed back in November but that's ancient history now. A small cut would still have them on a decent yield and it would show strong leadership in tackling the issues and making for a stronger and more streamlined business going forward. He also might have to cut jobs which is regrettable.I think he should keep his friends close but him enemies closer.I do think the Government must be looking at how hard the utilities have been hit a might take a slightly more cautious approach and be less brutal towards them. If the Government were to provide some subsidies to utilities companies to help become more GREENER then that saving could be passed onto the customers but who knows.I get the impression that Mr Conn doesn't really preempt some of the issues. You can't blame Government and Corbyn's intervention for everything. It's time to stand up and be counted Mr Conn

Natural gas price shot up tonight state side 7.9% due to extreme cold weather causing record amount of drawdown from stock. Hope for a rise in price for Centrica as they should be profiting from this.

Yes, I think there's a lot of frustration here, especially if you own a large chuck of this company ( me included) just a bit scared if they cut the div or stop it the share price would go into serious nose dive, then we would all be in it. People who bought heavily at 3 pound or 2.50 must be pulling there hair out with the share price at the moment. I personally hate Stop losses and very rarely use them and in the past have had a max of 10% in one company. I broke my own rules so I have my own self to blame for being in this position. All I can do is collect the dividends and wait for how long it takes to go up, 6 months, year or two

And where would the £3b+ funds come from to buy the 2.3b shares? I understand your frustration Port but from a company point of view it does not make sense, Net debt is already 2b.

Portside, I understand where you're coming from re the share buyback but most people are in these for the dividend and if there wasn't one many of the income funds and private income investors would drop this like a stone and then where would your share price be? As for comments from Mr Conn, what exactly would you like him to say? CNA is not the only Utility to be suffering so should all CEO's be sacked. I know you hold lots of CNA and it must be painful as it is for all us holders but I personally see it as a bonus to get such solid businesses for such a low price and exceptional yield. As Warren Buffet always espouses, patience is the key and he doesn't do too bad on it.
