According to analysis firm IHS Markit, 18 hedge funds made £80m from the initial share slump, with much more likely to have been banked since then, after further steep falls.

The biggest winner from July’s share price crash was hedge fund Marshall Wace, whose co-founder Sir Ian Marshall was a major backer of the leave campaign in the Brexit referendum.

Another institution that took out big bets on Carillion’s downfall is BlackRock, the US-based investment institution that hired former chancellor George Osborne as an adviser last year, on a £650,000 salary.

Talks failed per Guardian:

Construction firm Carillion is on the brink of collapse, raising fears for the future of a host of major government projects and day-to-day services, from schools to hospitals, prisons and the army.

The Cabinet Office hosted emergency talks aimed at mapping out a future for a company that employs 43,000 people – including nearly 20,000 in the UK – but the meeting broke up without a rescue deal being announced.

If government gets involved, share holders will get nothing. I was there with British Energy and lost everything. Government took over as they can't allow nuclear generation , 20% of uk electricity to be shutdown. In a year when electricity market recovered the government sold British Energy to Edf France for £10b. We share holders got nothing. The best is to sort out future of Clln with creditors.

It must be allowed to fail. This was learned the hard way with the banks. The equity is worthless. In my opinion, the company will be managed by administrators. It's contracts will be awarded to someone else or it will complete its obligations using government money before being sold on in pieces by the administrators. There will no money from this left after debtors and pension liabilities are taken care of. This is (or should be) a bust.

True. but short term gain OFTEN follows, as a consequence of quick fix Government / City intervention .. but no lasting viable long term prospect.

Banks will give it more money tonight. Only way for them to get back what they are already owed. Government will provide some modest guarantees including clearing some invoices.

If the government gets involved there's no chance of recovery. The taxpayer doesn't guarantee companies to save its shareholders, it only does so to save jobs.
