RCT2 : In general, I accept what you are saying. I'm not trying to talk up Carillion. I'm sure that the industry may have learned from past mistakes. I can't accept that anyone tenders with the intention of making a loss.

Are the 43,000 employees directly employed by Carillion or does this include a total of employees and subcontractors?

nom, its an industry wide problem, why do you think so many of these companies have problems? Several big players have gone bust in recent years (Rok and Connaught) and other FTSE companies such as Interserve and Balfour Beatty have had to admit to pricing problems on contracts. There is just no room for error, they are not properly pricing the contracts based on a normal distribution of returns on the jobs.

Problems in the Aberdeen road build appeared not just related to Carillion, but did the other 2 companies do less badly?

'In Aberdeen, Carillion, Balfour Beatty and Galliford Try tendered for subcontractors to do work including drainage, plant and equipment hire, earthworks, steel reinforcement and rock crushing, through contracts worth almost £200m.

“Contractors are increasingly really struggling to manage their business,” says Mark Farmer, who recently wrote a Government-commissioned report called Modernise or Die on improving construction efficiency.

“Although employing subcontractors helps businesses avoid a large payroll and keeps overheads down, it does have its downsides,” he says. “Many companies now want to have more control over who’s delivering the work, which means moving away from subcontractors.̶1; '

RCT2: If it were just Carillion, I would agree. However, it's not, it's Carillion, Eiffage and Kier, and Eiffage and Kier have agreed to complete the contract in the event that Carillion go under.

nom, as fenners says, the HS2 contracts would have been priced a long time ago. The level of uncertainty in the contracts is very high. On a simple statistical basis across the whole industry there is quite a significant chance that these contracts are mispriced.

A bit late to be of use to us PIs but an interesting article nonetheless.

RCT2 : I can think of two reasons: given the previous problems, they may well have been more cautious; this is a consortium, are we to believe that all three are wrong?

They are currently making something like £800m of provision on contracts that have been mispriced. How do you know the HS2 contract wont go the same way? Their margins are wafer thin as it is.

56p is good area to buy, then buy by averaging down to 50p. buyshares hold for few years, easy cash.

They have HS2 rail link contract, would have had to go through stringent assesment. They are not going to go bust.

Take stock from weak holders.

Looking at buying at lower levels...
