They are if you wear blinkers and close your mind off to every other tech and chemistry being developed.

Bmn at 7p is valued as a struggling vanadium producer .jury is out on be but in 6 years all they have done is arrange finance to buy a small mini grid from themselves .not looking great at the moment on the vfrb side when you look at the hard facts and reality .

Bill Gates is a shareholder in the iron flow battery company ESS too.

No. I believe it is salt based?

It’s a big win in our backyard.

Is that the iron redox batteries? They were always the vanadium killer.

Oh dear, oh dear. This monster project is right in our backyard. Makes our minigrid announcement look rather sad by comparison. And they VRFB are the only game in town and this in a country with all that Vanadium.

I wonder what made them choose a this chemistry from a company in the US rather than in S.A. with all of those advantages Mikhail and Fortune bang on about?

Also note that it will take 4 plus years to deliver and people think BE can deliver by the end of next year.

Unless a PV system is generating ‘extra’ energy or they want to time shift it or take advantage of cheaper night time rates then for many projects the starting point is just enough PV to reduce electricity during the day. The thought and economics of adding extra PV and batteries to store the energy just don’t make any sense.

There are all sorts of scenarios in theory for adding batteries. As I said a project might want to add batteries to store cheaper night time electricity without PV or wind, but is it economically viable to do so.

ESKOM and utility power supplies are different. They do generate extra electricity that would be worth storing.

That's great ..nothing about vanadium though??? Am I missing something??

In fact powerlink supply lithium batteries ..so it's a lithium battery ...

Bjt negative isn't it whoknew posting links to new lithium battery projects ...oh well each to their own aimwarrenbuffets at it to posting links to African renewable solar projects with no battery ....

Strange ...!!!

Perfect examlle of what I was talking about here. No need for battery as 30% of energy mix and article confirms all will be used in day light hours . Im struggling to see the market for battery mini grid at this point in time . This project will take until 2027 and is over 100 mw but theres no need for a battery. Unless your off-grid or your producing more electric than you can use wheres the mini grid market???. Seems fundamentally flawed at this moment in time .
