19/1/2018 17:29 | Philip Morris, Altria up more than 1% on upgrades Jan. 19, 2018 Analyst Owen Bennett (Jefferies) is bullish on the tobacco sector, seeing total returns over the next 12 months of 15% topping that of consumer staples by 500 basis points. Keys: Reduced risk product (RRP) segment development, possible M&A, increasing bond yields, and forex changes being a tailwind after years of headwinds. He upgrades Philip Morris (NYSE:PM) to Buy, with next week's Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee review being a possible immediate catalyst. He also upgrades Altria (NYSE:MO) to Buy, betting the company can halt the recent market share decline for Marlboro. British American Tobacco (NYSEMKT:BTI) remains his Top Pick. | philanderer

09/1/2018 08:10 | British American Tobacco (L:BATS) said on Tuesday that new U.S tax rules would boost its earnings per share by 6 percent in 2018, all other things being equal, supporting its commitment to high-single digit earnings growth. The maker of Lucky Strike and Dunhill cigarettes said the changes would also result in a non-cash exceptional tax credit as a result of the revaluation of deferred tax balances arising from the acquisition of Reynolds American in 2017. | pilgrim

20/12/2017 08:52 | BAT to benefit from US tax reform, says Berenberg Berenberg is predicting increased earnings at British American Tobacco (BATS) on the back of US tax changes. Analyst Jonathan Leinster retained his ‘buy’ recommendation and increased the target price from £55.75 to £57.20. The shares edged 42p higher to £50.02 yesterday. The tax reform bill which is expected to be passed by congress soon will lower US corporation tax from 35% to 21% from next year and while Leinster said the bill ‘raises a significant number of complications, few are expected to apply to BAT’. ‘Therefore, our assumption for the underlying group rate of tax falls from around 33% from 2018 onwards to around 27%,’ he said. ‘We have increased [our target price]…due to the higher expected earnings…caus ‘The price target puts our BAT valuation in line with the average of the other international tobacco players.’ | philanderer
