Proactive published a piece yesterday from Jeffries about BATS and IMB. Here's the link for anyone who's interested.

It wouldn't stand a legal challenge IMO. Next thing we will be having knife companies paying for stab victims.

DM story about a proposed tax on tobacco companies to help councils pay the clean up bills for discarded cigarette butts not really helping today. As long as KFC,Starbucks,Costa coffee,McDonalds etc get charged the same tax for the proportion of litter their companies produce then that's fair.

Goodish trading update from IMB with some growth achieved. They're in line to achieve year targets which is more positive than in recent years.

It would be bullish here if we could finish at a session high for a change instead of the gains petering out as usual towards the close of trade

PM up very nicely at close in US. Tobacco looking good again. An inflationary environment should be good for tobacco stocks.

I find it hard to believe that, I am a smoker and have been for 27 years, people have smoked for hundreds if not thousands of years, there will always be smokers! I tried switching to vaping but it felt like it was actually doing more damage to me than smoking itself, So I reverted back. I also smoke cannabis and the most favourable way to smoke cannabis for many people is with tobacco.

I do treat my tobacco holdings similar to an annuity, and expect decreasing prices, but a share price fall of 50% here in about 45 months has been a tad excessive.I know BAT,Unilever and other shares are treated as bond proxys, but relatively quick real share price falls still hurt even long term investors such as myself.Sometimes i need to convince myself that BAT is a 'steady investment sitting just below intrinsic value'.This intrinsic value appears to be questionable in this present market(probably due to the debt taken on by BAT acquiring the rest of Reynolds).Don't get me wrong i'm personally content with my holding here, and in IMB,but sometimes airing one's concerns is to be human where your own hard-earned is concerned.I totally agree with you researching new companies to invest in is a pain. And invariably from my experience it turns out to be a bad investment. As you say, stick to what you know and what you're comfortable with

But if you are an income investor/accumulator surely you want continually decreasing prices?

Yes, you can make a bit of money with share price increases but you then sell and then you are back to square one looking for another investment. I'd rather a steady investment sitting just below intrinsic value building up a holding and getting to know the company better.

I don't want to be continually learning about new companies. I want an easy life with good returns.

Well it's a bit more constructive than a downgrade or 'sell' rating

Totally agree CreditCrunchies. The QE in the US has been remarkable to behold. I love how economists use the words negative growth here, whereas they should just fess up and say shrinkage. We have muchos shrinkage when you factor in the purchasing power of the pound in your pocket since 2020.

FTSE100 is mainly global though whereas the FTSE350 captures all of the UK domestic companies. I think it's down to lack of stimulus from central bank here, whereas the US has had constant QE from 2009 to 2021 the overflow of that seemed to target German Dax rather than the FTSE. I think the FTSE100 gives you a big picture of the real global economy in reality, the real price of the global economy without stimulus. Basically global growth going nowhere.

ftse is still where it was in the year 2000. Add in 21 years of inflation. Stuffed. Which is why you need a diversified portfolio, ideally including some US ingredients.

I just get the impression the ftse100 is totally unloved as an index to invest in.There is still a Brexit overhang and still uncertainty how quickly economies will recover from restrictions when they end.Investors are quite happy to trade in and out of shares short term so as not to hold on to inventory for any length of time.Until confidence returns to the ftse this pattern will continue imho.If there was any trust or confidence in the index, or individual stocks, i don't think you'd get this degree of volatility.127million $1400 stimulus cheques are being handed out in the US which will help disposable incomes for individual consumers.

It's only a fraction of an ex dividend day so far. Things will get better in time. Most here are long term buy and hold so you will always get better chances to keep the dividend and make a capital gain on your shares, but not immediately.
