portside1,
Bob Dudley could probably say with some justification that Q3 2018 will be better than Q2 2018. It is a bit like saying that turnover at Xmastree PLC will be higher in Q4 than in Q2. If Q3 results are 30% below Q3 last year then believe me that is not a good thing. The fact that Q3 is forecast to be "better" than Q2 isn't as important as you are suggesting.

portside1,
Would it not be wiser to compare q3 with q3 rather than with q2. One prediction is "BP's underlying profits, excluding one-off charges for the Gulf, are expected to be to $3.17bn for the third quarter, from $5.02bn a year before. Mr Hutton said earnings from BP's refining and marketing arm may have fallen by 75pc due to a sharp drop in US refining margins."

When I posted that, the share price HAD ALREADY dropped precipitously, after climbing all day until then.
The turnover figures showed that the climb up until 2:00pm had been on low but steady volume, but that the drop coincided exactly, as you would expect, with a turnover volume more than quadruple the earlier buying.

Ergo, I 'wondered'/'said' "someone knows something".

In the event, it rose a little yesterday, then again today.

Agree! the cash could be spent elsewhere in another business to increase revenue, but already BP is saturated with so many small business that it will duplicate existing business and perhaps not very attractive or wortwhile.
It will have been very attractive to return cash to investors but on the other hand the numbers of shares is high making the yield small!
That's why is done.
The benefits will show in the future.
