Counter-cyclical AG Barr is a quality play, says Liberum

Liberum has upgraded its numbers for Irn-Bru maker AG Barr (BAG) after full-year results, which it says is a ‘sign of quality’.

Analyst Wayne Brown retained his ‘buy’ recommendation and target price of 600p on the stock, which lowered 6%, or 33p, to 509p on Tuesday.

He said full-year results for 2023 were ‘as expected’, with revenue and profit all modestly ahead and the group has ended with net cash of £53m despite ‘buying two businesses in the year, higher inventory, and the group concluding on phase one of its investment programme in its infrastructure’;.

‘Looking ahead, we modestly upgrade our numbers to be more in line with consensus, and see the potential for more M&A as the group takes advantage of the current economic climate,’ said Brown.

‘Considering the cost challenges, the fact we are upgrading is a sign of the quality of the business and how counter-cyclical the group is.’

justice, keep in mind ZIRP earnings multiples have compressed somewhat in the transition to a post ZIRP environment. Perhaps a mid teens PER is more understandable in this context?.

AG Barr posts jump in profits but warns over margin hit

Victoria Scholar, head of investment at Interactive Investor, said: "Investors are shrugging off the earnings beat, focusing on margin pressures with shares trading lower by more than 1%, landing the stock in negative territory year-to-date. Drinks brands have been facing headwinds on two fronts both on the cost side as well as the consumer side with the cost-of-living crisis prompting households to make cutbacks on non-essential items.

"Over recent months, shares have been rebounding, helped by the broader pick-up in market sentiment since the lows in October with shares up almost 15% over the past half year."

Has to be this...

....For financial 2024, AG Barr expects operating margins to be hit by its investments, as well as cost inflation, and the "initial dilutive impact" from the Boost acquisition.

I think we're in a £5 - £6 trading range until we see an improvement in the UK economy which is clearly going to take time Bang in the middle for now but crossing 525/575 are the signals for me

AG Barr rose 4.4%. The Iru-Bru maker said it expects annual profit to beat market expectations, though warned of a margin hit due to inflationary pressure in its new financial year.

AG Barr added that its plans for new regulatory rules in Scotland on single-use containers are ‘well-advanced’, though it noted consumer behaviour may be impacted.

Another quality announcement T/O up 17%, I have a small holding should have bought more!. Sensible acquisitions, bolt on's to existing distribution network. I have posted previously Funkin has returned 100% annually on purchase price. Moma & Boost early stages, but potential to cut costs & integrate into existing network. Refreshing to see a board with a well thought out but strategy. Still worth buying.

'Big-screen Bru baffles Barrs after Matilda the Musical finds its fizz'

The old-school orange can is instantly recognisable for Scots of a certain vintage but some would have been surprised to see Irn-Bru starring in musical blockbuster Matilda.

Even the makers of Scotland’s other national drink were surprised when it featured in the movie of the hit stage version of the Roald Dahl classic.

A can dating back to the 1970s and 80s features prominently in scenes in Matilda the Musical, which is currently showing in cinemas, alongside other classic British brands Golden Wonder, Kellogg’s and Cadbury’s.

It is seen being drunk by one of Matilda’s friends in the playground, before a classmate attempts telekinesis on the vintage can.

Then in a scene from Matilda’s imagination, a circus performer is seen levitating several cans above his head in a surreal carnival.

The prop used in the film, which stars Emma Thompson, Lashana Lynch, and Stephen Graham, features the design used on the 330ml cans from 1974 until 1988.

Addressing the cyber security skills gap in Scotland

Sophos is working with iconic Scottish soft drink brand AG Barr. In recent years, the manufacturing industry became a prevalent target for security attacks due to legacy systems and unpatched applications.

The main challenge for AG Barr was access to the skilled resource required to proactively search out security threats across a technology estate of laptops, desktops, servers, mobiles and tablets on a 24/7 basis.

AG Barr became an early adopter of Sophos MDR and has been able to undertake preventative work to increase security and avoid breaches rather than fire-fighting security threats as and when they occur.

“Having experts we can trust at the end of the phone, without delay, to help us navigate the constant security threats we face, not only delivers peace of mind but extraordinary value for money. It also saves us the expense of recruiting up to five new employees to take on this work,” notes Paul Ginestri, Information Security Specialist, AG Barr.
