22/4/2009 18:34 | Its very pleasing to see that Barc has gone thru the 50, 100 and 200 MA's. The last time it did that it immediately retraced and crashed (in Sept). Lets hope this time it will maintain despite the very clear likelehood that the Dow and the Footsie are still heading southwards. | hillbrown

22/4/2009 16:17 | LONDON (Dow Jones)--Qatar Holding on Wednesday said it had sold 35 million shares in Barclays PLC (BCS), reducing its stake in the U.K. bank to 5.82%, or 487.8 million shares. Qatar Holding, the Qatar government holding company, said the sale was part of a volatility-driven portfolio management strategy that it applies to a small part of its aggregate holding. At Wednesday's closing price of 218 pence, the sale was worth GBP76 million. Barclays declined to comment. The sovereign wealth fund is one of the two Middle Eastern investors that the bank turned to last October as part of a GBP7.3 billion capital raising through an institutional placement. Unlike other major U.K. banks such as Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC (RBS) and Lloyds Banking Group PLC (LYG), Barclays opted out of a government bailout, preferring to boost its capital base with private capital. Barclays capital raising was made up of GBP3 billion in reserve capital instruments, classified as debt, and GBP4 billion in mandatory convertible notes that are due to be converted to shares on or before June 30 at 153.3 pence. In addition, the investors subscribed for GBP3 billion in warrants that can be exercised at 197.8 pence a share. If these are exercised in full, the Middle East investors will own nearly 32% of Barclays. Qatar said its shareholding in Barclays would increase by 326.2 million shares upon conversion of its holding of the bank's mandatory convertible notes. "We remain a supportive long term shareholder in Barclays and a key commercial partner of Barclays," Qatar Holding said. The shares closed up 19 pence, or 10%, at 218 pence in a higher U.K. market. -By Marietta Cauchi, Dow Jones Newswires; +44 207 842 9241; marietta.cauchi@dowj | smurfy2001
