01/10/2018 16:27 | PEOPLE MOVES, SELL SIDE October 1, 2018 10:26 AM GMT Barclays appoints corporate broking director from Goldman Sachs Laura Klaassen, UK director for equity capital markets at Goldman Sachs, joined Barclays today as director for corporate broking. By Hayley McDowell Barclays has appointed a director in corporate broking from Goldman Sachs as the UK investment bank continues to invest in and expand its global equities business. Laura Klaassen joins Barclays after spending more than 11 years with Goldman Sachs in New York and London in various roles, most recently as vice president and UK director of equity capital markets. “[Klaassen] brings great experience and an outstanding client-service record to the team,” said Kunal Gandhi, head of corporate broking at Barclays. “Her appointment underlines the continued momentum within our corporate broking franchise and our focus on delivering strategic advice to our UK clients.” The hire is the latest move by Barclays to grow and expand its equities unit, with 50 new hires announced across banking, sales, trading and research throughout 2017 and this year. In May, the co-head of UK corporate broking at Deutsche Bank left his role to join Barclays as managing director for corporate broking. Similarly, JP Morgan’s global equity strategist, Emmanuel Cau, was poached by Barclays in April to head up the bank’s European equity strategy. In trading, Barclays hired Stephen Dainton last year, formerly co-head of global markets at Credit Suisse, and appointed him global head of equities leading the business in cash, programme trading, convertible, derivatives and syndicate. Across corporate and investment banking, Barclays is also implementing a new digital strategy in a bid to digitise its markets business and pursue new revenue opportunities. The current global head of electronic equities and head of cash equities for EMEA, Nas Al-Khudairi, will lead the project in partnership with the bank’s electronic trading teams. Barclays has said in the past that it will continue to selectively hire in the corporate and investment banking business as exceptional talent becomes available, specifically targeting areas in which the bank sees opportunities for growth. | bernie37

01/10/2018 16:12 | Berenberg said Barclays has the "strongest franchise of any non-US bank in the profitable US investment bank market and is gaining market share" barclays Berenberg raises its target price on Barclays to 220p from 200p Barclays PLC (LON:BARC) shares edged higher on Monday after Berenberg upgraded its recommendation to ‘buy’ from ‘hold', saying it expects improved returns from the investment bank arm. The lender has come under increasing pressure from activist investor Edward Bramson wind down parts of the investment bank that do not directly serve corporate clients. Call for chairman John McFarlane to resign Bramson, whose investment vehicle Sherborne Investors took a 5% stake in Barlcays in February, has also called for chairman John McFarlane to resign as part of his lobby for a major shake-up of the bank. Berenberg noted that concerns around the investment bank have driven a 15% drop in Barclays' shares in the year to date. “Despite our cautious investment bank revenue outlook, and past concerns around strategy, the market’s expectation of a 5.5% return on tangible equity (RoTE) from Barclays’ investment bank is too low,” the broker said, raising its target price to 220p from 200p. “It has the strongest franchise of any non-US bank in the profitable US investment bank market and is gaining market share. We believe Barclays’ investment bank returns can rise towards 9% by fiscal year 2020 with group returns bolstered further by its best-in-class UK business.” In the first half, Barclays’ corporate and investment bank saw total income rise 1% to £5.4bn, largely due to a strong performance in the equities division. The division posted a 17% rise in pre-tax profits to £2bn. READ: Barclays first half profits slide as litigation and conduct costs bite Berenberg said the investment bank is “successfully growing”. “Specifically, it achieved top-two year-on-year revenue improvements in every European IB market during H118, as well as US equities and FICC. While sustaining these gains is not guaranteed, execution risks from not growing the IB are now less.” The broker added that it has long argued that the bank’s UK division is “best-in-class “Loan growth has been admirably countercyclical and Barclays is less exposed to consumer credit than many perceive. “Despite this prudence, Barclays’ UK revenue yields are higher and more stable than peers’. Accounting for 40% of PBT and generating high-teen RoTEs, we believe this business provides a profitable bedrock of stability.” Shares rose 1.1% to 173.7p in morning trading. | bernie37

29/9/2018 17:34 | In the last year the Barclays PLC (LON:BARC) (BARC.L) share price has fallen by around 6%. That’s a disappointing performance in my view. It shows that investors remain cautious about the company’s prospects in spite of what I consider to be an improving financial outlook. The bank has been able to improve its financial strength in the last couple of years in my opinion. It has sought to strengthen its capital ratios at the expense of dividends, and this could put it on a firmer financial footing for the delivery of long-term EPS growth. Speaking of profitability, Barclays is expected to record EPS growth of 15% next year. This has the potential to improve investor sentiment, and may show the market that the company is able to perform well after a mixed period. Improving financial performance means that excess capital could be generated by the company over the medium term. This could help it to increase its income investing appeal after a disappointing period regarding dividend growth. In the next couple of years, the company’s dividend is expected to increase from 3p in 2017 to 7.9p in 2019. This means the stock has a forward dividend yield of 4.3% for the 2019 financial year. This could indicate it offers improving income investing potential, as well as a relatively low valuation. With the Barclays share price having fallen in the last year, it now has a P/E ratio of approximately 10. This is relatively low at a time when the FTSE 100 is trading close to a record high, and indicates that there could be a margin of safety on offer. Therefore, while it may not be a popular stock, I think there is growth potential on offer. A relatively low valuation, dividend potential and the prospect of double-digit EPS growth could lead to an impressive total return over the next few years. | bernie37
