I agree with that suggestion that the Google gang, if impressed by Avanti's efforts, might snap up Avanti in order grab control of satellites already in the sky and under construction (and to capture their skyspace licenses, if they look like ones worth nabbing), as a way of getting themselves into the race earlier than their own first satellite would have done. They could still feed their own planned satellite into the programme without so much pressure to hurry it.

Count - by 2013 we will be a much bigger company. If our service both in space and in the ground is good then Google will be a very late entry playing catchup.
Nothing to worry about for us today.

First mover advantage and anyway; imitation is the greatest form of flattery.
Maybe even a buyout in the distant future!

This was written pre-launch, but has some useful observations and comparisons regarding demand and signal quality:

MTG and deadsceptical I think you're both right coz they are different scenarios.

That bit above (1765) is interesting. I've not heard of O3b. Best start googling.

trust funds will want to insure that the satellite is operating as specified then watch out for some big buys

deadsceptical (1756) - that's a different pattern of movement and different circumstance than the one I was referring to. The one I'm referring to is one that relates to early traders cashing in, and the share price subsequently continuing. Not the unreality/reality pattern that your post refers to, and which as you say, does not apply here ;o)

The 8;25-8:45am reversal (when it happens) is usually on stocks where the direction of the big opening move is correct and continues.

I guess they chose an interesting day today to announce their own news, to try and get maximum publicity after our own Hylas launch.

But what do people know of these guys and will they be a threat to us one day, or is the market just too big at the moment? Any comments welcome from the more learned among you but here is the news announcement.....

LONDON (Dow Jones)--Satellite communications company O3b Networks said Monday it has raised $1.2 billion from a group of investors and banks, its final funding round before the launch of its global satellite broadband network.

O3b, which is backed by Google Inc. (GOOG), plans to launch its fiber-quality Internet service serving emerging markets in the first half of 2013, after securing $770 million of debt financing and $410 million of equity investment.

O3b shareholders include Google, satellite operator SES SA (008808732.LU), HSBC Holdings PLC (HSBA.LN), and Liberty Global Inc. (LBTYA). Following the fundraising SES is the largest shareholder.

Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture between Thales SA (HO.FR) and Finmeccanica SpA (FNC.MI), is currently building O3b's first eight Ka-band satellites.

The firm's name refers to the "other 3 billion" people in the world currently without access to broadband Internet.

This is by far my biggest holding and I would have sold some at £10 or more just to re-balance my portfolio, but I'm not selling any at theses daft prices. A hold at the moment is the obvious strategy with a certainty of further rises to come. imho.

The effect observed when a share price rises sharply immediately and then drops over the next 90 minutes is in a different category. That is when the market makers shove up the price knowing there will be buying and then reality makes it drift down

The reality here is that there is a near certainty of £10-£12 by Jan 2012 so there will always be lots of buyers into the dips. A 50% profit over the next 12 months seems a reasonale return.

The true battle is between those who can see and trust the future of £10 plus and those who do not care about the future because they have made 50% and want to cash in while in profit.

Anyone who is doing the sums and looking forward will be buying on the dips. Will someone tell me when the profit takers put us in a good dip for buying.

An awful lot of peps grabbing the dosh. We need the 700p area to act as support - if it doesn't; who knows?

Many a stock that surges (or plunges) from 8am, undergoes a rebound between about 8:25am and 8:45am before continuing the earlier move. I've no idea if the same will happen here, but no surprise if it does.
