There is a report in Space News saying "Avanti has said Hylas 2 will provide 8.28 gigahertz of capacity to up to 1 million subscribers, while Hylas 1, with a capacity of 3 gigahertz, can serve up to 350,000 subscribers."

Interesting contract with Internet Solutions. Internet Solutions are owned by Dimension Data which was bought by NTT, the massive Japanese Telecoms group, for a couple of billion pounds a couple of years back. Since then they have expanded DD hugely, not least with the acquisition of OpSource for another billion, as NTT are using DD as a hub for rapid expansion into cloud computing.

To be honest NTT over paid for DD, but have been saved by the explosion in cloud computing since.

At least with NTT as the ultimate contractor they should at least get paid this time!

Great news re Paul Walsh becoming deputy chairman and in March taking in chairman role. He has an impeccable record and would not risk his reputation if there was any concerns. Huge vote of confidence. Will start adding again.

Matt 783 - I agree - there is a lot of discussion on satellites / slots etc but what is really key is the financial position that this company finds itself and updates to the situation. Hope someone is attending the AGM that can shed some light.

I would also add that his track record carries far more credibility as someone who has contributed in building business than someone who has done little else but tried to destroy companies.

What a coup for Avanti

Paul Walsh to take over as Chairman

London - 14 November 2013. Avanti Communications Group plc (AIM: AVN, "Avanti" or "the Group"), the satellite operator, has appointed Paul Walsh Deputy Chairman with effect from 14 November. He will become Chairman on 27 March 2014, thereafter John Brackenbury will continue to serve as a Non-Executive Director.

John Brackenbury CBE, Chairman said

"I am delighted that Paul has agreed to take over as Chairman in line with our succession planning. Paul's outstanding track record in growth markets and at the top of International corporate life will be invaluable as Avanti moves to the next stage of development."

Paul Walsh, commented:

"Avanti has a high quality product with significant competitive advantages and an emerging premium brand. It is beginning to monetise global data growth and I am delighted to be able to contribute to its success in these exciting high growth markets."

if the satellite is to de-orbit surely it just burns up on descent or drops to the ground preferably in the sea. I suppose there would be a cost if the descent was made onto simons house. he had better be careful what he shorts.
accidents do happen.
so is there a cost to that? just give it an instruction to fall! a few watts of electricity.
no need to ask that question then
and why is simon signing it matt? is that a new alias that he put under the wrong
poster name?

HiGekks,

The Ka-band, dubbed the "satellite super-highway", is a fast, uncongested and underutilised satellite network."

Well, AVN certainly seems to have something of a problem re 'underutilisation'...

I wonder if this has any relevance to AVN ?

12/11/2013

"A rarely used satellite network known as the Ka-band is one step closer to being brought into action so that it can support future UK drone missions.
The development comes after engineers – based at the Future Combat Air Systems (FCAS) business at defence giant BAE Systems and European aerospace firm Astrium – found a way to use a "communications corridor" within the Ka-band to send large amounts of data into space. The Ka-band, dubbed the "satellite super-highway", is a fast, uncongested and underutilised satellite network."

jeffian re your extract from my comment

The comment concerned the procurement policies of large organisations. It is my understanding that, without framework agreements, such organisations often have clauses in procurement that demand competitive tendering for contracts of sufficient size. However, AVN has framework agreements so that does not apply.

In my view, AVN is unique (so far) in that it is the only operator to have proven that KA band can be used in this area. There are other operators with KA band capacity, but I do not think that any of these have attacked that segment as yet. Thus a competitive tender might have been called for with no other bidders, but the rules would have said tenders must be called for.

The recent AVM white paper on KA band demonstrates why not all KA band is equal. It is an interesting read.

I am aware that at least on other new entrant to the market plans to launch KA band satellites, so there could be more competition in the future. Hence my closing remark on management needing to deliver.
