Having bought shares earlier this year, I just thought I'd add my two penneth.

Cheers.

this is true but avanti are on the brink of turning a profit for the first time and i feel confident that regardless of what market fluctuations bring this stock will perform very well over the next couple of years. It is frustrating watching it go down but im in for the long term. been here six years so another couple wont matter!

Jonnib the board invariably deliver good news followed by a share price drop, don't expect anything different! J.

You too yorgi.
I can see this rising in anticipation of what wednesday will bring. I can also see a really positive RNS on all fronts. I dont think avanti have ever not delivered what they said they would......

Nothing to get excited about but held in posative territory today anyway. Let's hope it continues Monday.

Have a good weekend everyone :-)

piadda - per your comment on stop losses - I have taken to tactically putting deeply discounted limit orders in for shares I am long or wish to be long and which have observable spikes down. It can be quite difficult judging the distance though, it's quite annoying for a that to happen and not get the order filled. The risk of course is picking up shares if genuinely bad news has hit, so one has to be very confident of the fundamentals and also deploy for short time scales when it seems that the price is drifting because of no news - as here.

Soon after 8am TDW chart shows the price dipped to £3.01 but the volume was zero!

Confused? Surely from where I am sat! Was high £3.20's either side of the downward spike.

340p is a key level again as former support becomes resistance.

Warren Buffet reckons you should welcome price drops in companies you own as it is a chance to buy at less than the company is worth. I find this is hard to explain to my wife when she sees the paper loss.

I no longer set a stop loss on thinly traded shares. I have been caught by sudden and very temporary spikes down. Seen it on many Aim shares since. It is a market makers dream. The lower the price the more they can buy.

Simon Cawkwell is an individual. Mind you,he`s large enough to be an institution! :-)

Why do I believe the likes of us cannot short sell?
I thought only big institutions could avail themselves of them and we are reduced to spread betting or CFD deals?

I keep meaning to ask my MP to propose a short sell tax which makes the practice prohibitive or to ban them as they do in some countries. I think it obscene that one share can have effectively two owners simultaneously.

sg31-I think long term investors(of which I am one) are also affected by the machinations that go on. It`s not only traders on margins who have stop losses. You can`t be seriously defending a system where the share price is artificially manipulated? And I`m not talking about short selling which everyone is entitled to do.

Hi sg31,

One 'good' use of limit orders is to place a 'sell' order significantly ABOVE the current (or expected) share price :

Your broker can't then lend out your shares - for his gain - to shorters and others......so helps keep him/her honest !

Trades are hidden and delayed sometimes by days to give a completely false impression of the market, rns`s are leaked(witness the increase in volume yesterday afternoon) and you have a thoroughly corrupt market where the pi`s get shafted all the time!

It affects traders much more than investors. If you buy at a price you are happy with after researching the company then short term price movements aren't a problem. If I don't use "stop losses" they can't find mine can they. If someone gets prior information it doesn't affect a long term holder 5 years from now it will be of no significance.

People using margin in these markets need to have a serious rethink.

Seems to be pretty futile to have a stop loss if the price is deliberately manipulated to take it out.Trades are hidden and delayed sometimes by days to give a completely false impression of the market, rns`s are leaked(witness the increase in volume yesterday afternoon) and you have a thoroughly corrupt market where the pi`s get shafted all the time!

Yesterday showed once again the danger of stop losses.....although of course there could be a day when they save ones bacon !

Glad I managed to top-up again 10% below the big director buys last year. AVN has progressed so much since then; roll on the 10th!
