We had good anecdotal evidence through the recession that we were doing well but now we have the hard numbers; and it's very positive," said Richard Peckham from EADS Astrium and chair of UK Space, an umbrella group representing the ..................................

Inmarsat issued a management update this morning, it was very positive, extract below:-

Andrew Sukawaty, Inmarsat's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, said, "Growth in the third quarter was driven by strong growth in aeronautical and leasing services and by improved results from maritime, our largest sector. We are also reporting the first revenue resulting from the implementation of Phase 1 of our Cooperation Agreement with LightSquared. With solid revenue growth and tight cost control, our profitability and cash flow growth remain very healthy. We are on track for a good result for the year."

thanks, ive had all those arguments in my head many times over, im now happy with where i am in terms of this share, i think anything under 6 pounds is a good buy point, and i think a successful launch should see us rebase at about 7 pounds circa 20% which is a good return, and a move over the next 6-12 months to 10 pounds on contract news and news with regards to hylas 2 and 3. Hey maybe someone will through in a takeover rumour before, but yer, thats my 2 cents.

In terms of a launch failure i think it will overshoot if it did occur, maybe down to near 3 pounds, but as an equity raising was done at 430 and they will also hopefully quickly act to get another satellite, i would see anything under 430 a bargain in that a scenario.

Good questions, often thought about these myself. Is the market more than just GB, I think it is so quite a large market collectively. Also companies would look at this technology as a backup connection to copper/fibre, not sure on this but sounds plausible. can anyone with good knowledge on this co. offer a more informed answer. cheers.

1. although percentage wise the amount of people unconnected in britain, is small in terms of numbers there are more than enough who would be ideal candidates for avantis product, for example my uncle lives in a village of about 1000 people and it is not possible to get broadband there still.

2. developing markets will play a huge role as outlined by hylas 2 which will target the middle east and africa etc where the expenditure on infrastructure is unnecessary when wireless communications can perform the role.

3. companies such as inmarsat etc are only just now ordering ka band satellites, as well as this they are targeting different markets to avanti, and avantis ability to position themselves as the first provider should lead to follow through contracts for its subsequent satellites, and again satellites take a year or more to build it dosent happen in days.

4. mobile internet does have a role to play but i can say that even 3g is weak in a lot of areas still, i have tried mobile internet and whilst it worked at my home adress on the move and at my uni address is was pretty weak to say the least, a satellite give a much more secure and guaranteed service.

lastly, the fact avanti is a market leader in this technology and has a wave spectrum that allows 13 satellites to be launched makes it an asset to other companies and thus a takeover target. Satellite communications are somewhat niche but it does help with prices and as you can see it is still a multibillion pound industry, the chief exec is experienced in this market and knows what he is doing, as well as this there is already a potential contract worth 100 million probably from an army, again satellite broadband is secure and there is an appeal for governments in this fact too.

i hope this helps answer your queries, and if i have missed out anything you would like to know please let me know.

Guys I have vaguely come across this before but have always had a few doubts.... wonder how you would answer them...

Firstly, the percentage of households of businesses without broadband access is falling as more places get connected.... the market in very remote places will be small in any event as not many people live there..... most places will have copper telephone wires connecting them especially in Europe and so must have the capacity to have broadband installed...... so unless you are a farmer in the middle of Dartmour or the scottish highlands I can't quite see the demand for this product...

Perhaps if it was focusing on developing countries which often don't have copper phone lines installed but have jumped straight to mobile phones it would have a bigger market.... I can see there maybe some scope as a backup broadband supplier in developing markets but companies won't pay too much for this.... in the developed world this is surely a niche market..

Secondly, the valuations for the company are based on the sales coming through and pricing remaining strong.... on the former I have outlined my doubts... on pricing if this is such a strong market someone else will merely fire another satellite into space.... and lower costs....... I'm going to try to read some analyst reports on this but it just looks like a speculative story stock.....

I just can't see how the remote broadband market is that big or will have such pricing power... we must also remember it will compete with 3G data services which will convert to 4G in a year or so and are the mobile operators fast data services.. here prices are falling fast.... so many are replacing fixed lines with mobile telephony and broadband.... these services can easily and at relatively low cost go to rural areas... i.e. just set up another 4G station... these stations have to be there anyway for mobile access....

on the face I can see the attractions of the economics here ... if the whole telecoms industry was done again it would all be mobile data and satellite broadband.... however, I just can't see the large market for the group at present... there is a niche market as a backup data provider but how big the opportunity is there I don't know... but not huge ...

i was just wondering if anyone here knew what exactly happened to the de merged avanti screenmedia/ asg. i see they had good profits until the demerger, but then went into administration in 2009, was it merely due to the credit crunch? just kind of intrigued as to what went on.
