Optimist,
Yep, good vehicle overall. Good off road capability and okay on road, though no sports car, it's the best compromise. 320 engine is thirsty but bullet proof. Desirable options are lux pack(includes leather) family pack(7seats) and the larger alloys are subtle but make it look much better. Air con is standard, the early ones(pre tiptronic gearbox) are U.S. built and the interior trim quality is occasionally patchy. Get a good one with proper service history and it will go on for ever.
I've had a 320, 430 and 500. Now got a new vogue 'cos I got bored!

Has anyone any experience of the Merc M class? I'm considering buying an early model second hand.

dontknowitall - thanks for that, I didn't know!

Come to think about it, what about that bloke in Wales with a Reliant Robin who led the police on a chase for 2 hours & they were unable to catch him. Now THAT'S a fun car!

My apologies to the rest of you who wish to have a sensible discussion about cars - but they are boring aren't they? (I also have an N reg 1.4 "gutless" Astra with 141,000 on the clock & its still going fine. What's more I didn't even pay for it cos I got it free in a GM card promotion (and 12,000 quidsworth of free car is definitely not boring)- underneath the bonnet it has an Opel manufacturer's plate so perhaps the secret is to buy a German car?

Comment to "The Player" (original poster) - Golf GTI sounds nice but if you've ever had the fun of driving the mark1 (1980s) when it was THE hot hatch you'll appreciate why it'll never be the same again. All the best with finding a diesel - I've used them (Uno & Focus)- not worth the hassle nowadays.

Cheers 0007 - now the DB7..........................

0007 - I shouldn't think you're too interested, but just to clear the matter, the Volvo S60 is a saloon only model.

I'm looking to replace my ageing Saab 9000 CSE 2.3T - any experiences of the later Saab 95s? I should add that the old Saab was sold as a Ferrari eater in its day (obvioulsy over certain speed ranges) ! Non of this limp wristed low-pressure turbo stuff that some Saabs have now.

Done the hatchback estate & all that - get a Mini Cooper & have some fun!

(I'm too old for mundane cars - whatever you buy they go wrong & lose money)

Cheers 0007

2 litre supercharged ERA (terrifying blistering bliss) not actually a hatchback or available for 20K though, but the most amazing single seater racing car; at Silverstone in the rain yesterday, but it didn't win.

Player they are knocking out V40s out cheap as they are about to stop production of that version and bring out a completly new model so they are clearing stock.

A new Renault is about as reliable as a three year old nissan. They do have good diesels but the electrics are a bit dodgy.

Alchemy,

Yes, it is. Will be living on the continent for the next year and a bit and it really will be essential during two summers.

Drove a Renault Laguna 1.9Dci this afternoon. Gorgeous! Has everything I could ask for including climate control (better than Air Con). I think I may have found the car I want.

Test drove the Volvo V40 estate this morning. The "Sport" verion is being sold for the same price as the regular. That comes with complete leather interior, foglamps, air con and a lot more. Even better than I expected and all for Euro18,500.

The tried the Golf 1.9TDi 150 BHP, 6 speed. Incredible engine. But, the interior isn't a patch on the Volvo. No leather, no air con. Everything is an extra with VW! ;-( They really do sell the Golf on reputation rather than what you actually get for your money. A/C is pretty much standard now. Euro 19,000.

Don't know what to do!

Any views on the Volvo V40 Estate?

It seems like one hell of a lot of car for the money. And it comes with typical Scandinavian emphasis on safety - airbags everywhere!

Exchanged a volvo T5 for a ford mondeo Zetec tdc1 diesel - been pleasantly surprised has a good deal of power and comfort and space and condsiderably reduced running costs, doesn't quite have the "klunk" of the volvo though.

Rylands in Leamington Spa do a very good range of ex lease direct. and you get a very complete history showing the average cost per mile to run the car. bought a volvo 850 off them 4 years ago and had no complaints once they coughed for two new tyres as agreed instead of using the spare as one of the 'new' tyres
