Player i dont think the turbo kicks in at those revs, all diesels are a little bit noisy at low revs.

I am driving a Renault Laguna 1.9Dci.

Is anyone else driving the same car, or another Renault with the same engine? Or, indeed, any turbo charged diesel?

I'd like to know if you find that the turbo (I think it's the turbo!) is noticably loud between 1,000 and 1,300 r.p.m.? Whether in gear or if you just tickle the throttle to bring it up to that r.p.m.

Below that, when it's idling, it makes no noise. While above that, which is most of the time, it doesn't make any noise either. It's just the frequency at those revs causes a drone-like vibration.

Am I being over sensitive? I love the car.

My wife got fed up with neither our Jag nor the ancient Renault Espace having a functioning heater. So she bought a new Ford Fiesta online for £7k. Now we both drive that all the time when the other one hasn't got it. I thought I'd never get in it but unexpectedly find it does everything I need and I love its well-designed functionality.

It doesn't look cool and its acceleration is poor. But it cruises happily at 85, it's comfortable on long journeys, it's nippy enough around town, it is seriously cheap to run and it's a doddle to park in tiny spaces. In these days of speed cameras and congested roads, I think I've given up any idea of having fun on the roads so why not?

"Look - my other car is over there"

Find an aerial view of a parking space or road. Suspend a model car so as to look part of the scene. But to ensure unreality, leave a blatant hint of whatever hand or ruler etc is involved. Take a photo and submit it to

(Apparently this is fun, and draws entrants from all over the world. Hmm.)

Darktone, Martini and Oswd

Thank you all for those links. I'm ploughing through them all and gathering some interesting info. it looks as though there are at least a couple of companies that may do repairs. I've yet to find any articles describing the internal circuit of the unit but I think I understand it enough to risk running the car for the time being on one meant for a different engine.

There are a number of Merc owners clubs on line which may give you help.
Problem is they seem to want you to join to get help.
Here are a couple I found if of any help.

Thanks for that Darktone.

The problem is in the module (Bosch 227 series ICU) that controls the ignition coil. It is a sealed unit but I have ordered a special screwdriver that will enable me to take the top off. So far I am struggling to find useful info on line.

Who are SH that you mention above?

You havent said where the problem is. if its in the brain repair should be cheap enough from a decent Fuel injection centre say £200-300 max.. should be plenty online info.. if is module and or distributor you will probably have to replace..if the car is 20years old there are plenty of ways the wiring can fail (earths/bad sensor contacts etc) these can show up some diagnostic systems as a faulty part..

If youre sure its a part fault then why not try SH.. heres a number,,never used them though. 01932 782885 .

Either the above or maplins/RS if its a labour of love.. :)

good luck

Basicaly I want to repair it. My local Merc dealer wants £1K+ for a new one so I have some incentive.

The technology is nearly 20 years old so it can't be that difficult. I just need to find out how it works.

Optimist,

You've got the right name ...... My advice would be to take it to a Bosch agent/specialist.

I'm impressed. Reminds me of younger days when a good friend, 6' 7.5" tall, bought himself a mini (the original one) Not too much room in the back, drivers side! I almost said in my post that at the time, I was looking for an everyday car rather than a w/e fun thing.

No problem with bikes, my brother went that route, but prefer comfort these days, and so does the better half.
