Gwagon tank...why buy something as ugly as this? Its not even cheap to run, the sevicing costs alone will bankrupt the average punter. Overpriced german mechanicals that never wear out....cos the owners go bankrupt trying to run them in the first place...always plenty of LOW milage examples about.

Slight change of tack - HOW would you buy?

It's new car time - do I pay cash up front or go for one of the contract purchase/lease options? I'm a private buyer - with no business angle to consider. Anyone got experience of this - any recomemndations for sellers etc?
Cheers, 0007 (can't afford the DB7!)

Spud,

Too true!

I couldn't justify it even if I could.

But, I could certainly justify a second-hand one.

Just found the UK G-Wagen site I mentioned above. Here it is......

And another site of general interest...........

And finally......................

Sigh! :-)

Went, yesterday, to the Mercedes Belgium headquarters here in Brussels.

Seriously impressive showroom.

Drop dead gorgeous G-Wagen on display.

An interesting half-hour.

eMpTy glass,

Is the one on the left Renault's replacement for the truly ugly Avantime ?

Had an X5 - excellent vehicle, now replaced by a Range Rover 4.4 V8 Vogue - the best of German engineering and British style - and for fun, a Lotus Elise 111R - the best of British style and engineering plus a cracking Japanese engine .....

5 litres? Pah! Who needs engines anyway.

next event, August 2004 at Knebworth.

Nothing wrong with the M class but you really need the 5 litre. I still prefer my SL but it is not so good for transporting dogs.

Spud,

Ta. I knew that, but had forgotten that I did.

It is precisely the rawness that appeals to me.

The M-Class is strictly for Sainsbury forecourts!

I remember in the last series of the Sopranos, shortly before his demise, Ralphie desribing the Boxster as a "Porsche in panties." Ditto the M-Class! ;-)

If you want a Porsche, buy a second hand 911 before buying a new Boxster.

Hope you are VERY well.

If you hire the TR4A keep off the M'ways it will be much more fun down the country lanes. If you must go on a major road from Warwick then try tye Fosseway through the Cotswolds - watch out for speed cameras though.

Not bad for you, or not bad for them?

;o)

(If they're making money at it, maybe worth setting up something similar elsewhere)

Cheers M.T.Glass - £150 for a day's hire on a TR4A not bad value.

TP...the G wagen was actually made in Austria for Mercedes by Puch-Steyr...its not actually a Mercedes really except in name ...its a bit basic and much less refined than you'd expect from a Merc ...never had one myself but know several people who did ...

oswd - re Triumph TR4A/5

If you fancy driving one (and posing for your own pics) try hiring from this Warwick firm:

Anyone here own, or ever owned, a Mercedes G-Wagen?

Not a sign of them on the UK Mercedes website, nor the French site.

Here they are on the Belgian site. Quite popular over here (Brussels).

I seem to remember coming across a dealer in England that specializes in second-hand G-Wagens. Any ideas?

I have not looked into this in detail but I believe that there are two types of gas metering. The first sucks the gas into the airflow in much the same way as a carburetta works. The second attempts to regulate the flow acording to demand which imitates the working of a fuel injection system.
