The largest use of palladium today is in catalytic converters. Palladium is also used in jewelry, dentistry, watch making, blood sugar test strips, aircraft spark plugs, surgical instruments, and electrical contacts. Palladium is also used to make some professional transverse (concert or classical) flutes. As a commodity, palladium bullion has ISO currency codes of XPD and 964. Palladium is one of only four metals to have such codes, the others being gold, silver and platinum. Because it adsorbs hydrogen, palladium was a key component of the controversial cold fusion experiments of the late 1980s.

Anticipated lower interest rates coupled with higher demand for specific materials such as Palladium will improve miners in the medium term.
Automobile industry in particular need more palladium per vehicle to meet tightening emissions standards going around for a few years now. One can imagine the number of automobile/truck factories around the world producing millions of vehicles !

i suspect due to consolidation of mining industry over the years, it would be a shame if AAL gets bid approach before managing to open the huge potash in Whitby. The upside from this alone would be huge...although it is a long way off...but the asset is very useful one for big firms like rio glencore and BHP...

One shoud check the share price on 31st of December. I also feel some kind of consolidation may start in this sector as the UK stocks in particular, are well undervalued (A few approaches for Currys; today Spirent taken over). Many years ago it was BHP targeting RIO. AAL with its precious and rare metals could be a smaller fish to swallow. (Market Caps: BHP = 115B, RIO = 82B, AAL = 23B).

The way to make money is to ignore the crowd – so forget Nvidia and buy this miner

Questor share tip: profits may have fallen, but investors should never forget that this is a cyclical business

Mining stocks plunge amid flood of cheap Indonesian nickel

FTSE mining stocks have plunged to their lowest level in more than two years amid a flood of cheap Indonesian nickel onto global markets.

Many of the world’s largest nickel mines have been left unprofitable amid plummeting prices for the metal, which is vital for the development of green technologies.

Western governments are scrambling to secure supplies of nickel as they seek to hit net zero goals but coal-fired nickel mining in Indonesia is pricing out more climate-friendly producers.

Nickel prices are trading around their lowest levels in more than two years, although prices have ticked up by about 4.3pc over the last month.

Industrial metal miners across the FTSE 350 have fallen by as much as 2.6pc today and by more than 7pc over the last month as they have also been hit by declining copper prices.

Anglo American chief executive Duncan Wanblad said last week: “There is a serious structural challenge as a result of Indonesian nickel. They don’t seem to be letting up anytime soon.”
