25/2/2018 12:04 | Apple Is Looking to Lock Down Its Cobalt Supply: With the demand for electric vehicles surging, Apple is looking to ensure sufficient supplies of a key ingredient in its iPhone batteries. Apple is well-known for its design innovation, the quality of its products, and the fan-like devotion of its customers. Another less celebrated, though key factor to the company's success is its strict management of its supply chain, which is among the finest in the world. Apple has used its substantial warchest, massive financial resources, and industry clout to secure key components from suppliers in the past. Now it looks like Apple is going back to the well -- or in this case, the mine -- to ensure it has sufficient cobalt for its needs. Apple has a history of acting to lock down key components: Apple is seeking to negotiate exclusive contracts with cobalt miners to ensure it can lock down a sufficient supply of the metal used in its iPhone batteries. This is the first time Apple has dealt directly with the miners, according to a report by Bloomberg. The price of the element, which is a key ingredient in lithium-ion batteries, has seen its price triple over the last 18 months alone. Demand for batteries that use the mineral have spiked in recent years, as they are used in both smartphones and electric cars. The increasing popularity of electric vehicles has prompted fears of a brewing shortage of the raw material, as electric car batteries consume more than a thousand times the amount of cobalt used for cell phone batteries. Apple isn't the only company looking to ensure its supply. A number of other companies were cited, including electronics manufacturer Samsung, as well as car makers BMW and Volkswagen AG, according to the report. This comes on the heels of a deal reached between Australian Mines and SK Innovation, which produces electric vehicle batteries. Under the terms of an exclusive agreement, SK will buy the all of the output produced by Australian's Sconi mine for the next 13 years -- guaranteed at today's prices. Not the first time -- or the last: This isn't the first time Apple has gone directly to suppliers to ensure the company has control of vital components necessary for its products. Reports indicate that Apple worked out an exclusive deal with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company to supply the custom A10 Fusion and A11 Bionic chips that are used in the company's iPhones. Apple also made a strategic $390 million investment in Finisar, which supplies the vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) used in the 3D sensing technology in iPhones. These components enable the FaceID and TrueDepth camera system that are key features in the iPhone 8 and X models. This way, Apple was able to ensure sufficient output while likely denying competitors access to the emerging technology. It should be noted, though, that the exact terms of the deal were not disclosed. There were also reports that Lumentum Holdings, the only other notable supplier of VCSELs, may have reached an exclusive supply deal with Apple, at least according to analyst Jun Zhang of Rosenblatt Securities. If true, this would leave limited supply of the hardware necessary for Apple competitors, while providing a guaranteed revenue stream for Lumentum. The importance of inventory and the supply chain: It is important to remember that prior to becoming Apple's CEO, Tim Cook spent more than a decade developing Apple's supply chain and making it one of the best in the world, a key factor to the company's continuing success. Market research company Gartner publishes an annual report of the top 25 supply chains worldwide. After Apple spent more than a decade at the top of the list, Gartner created a special "Masters" category in 2015 "to recognize sustained leadership over the last 10 years." Apple and Procter & Gamble were the inaugural members of the category, which has since seen the addition of Amazon. | loganair
25/2/2018 11:06 | duxy - I totally agree, when it comes to Apple it is all about locking in supplies of Cobalt. It seems to me, Apple and others say about it being 'Non-conflict' - Clean Cobalt is more to do with PR as what I've been hearing it is much more to do with making sure they have locked in the supply of the Cobalt they need. I understand that Samsung for their smart phones, BMW and other car companies are also looking at locking in supplies of Cobalt, rather then what the price of Cobalt is likely to be. The latest reports says there will be, 100 million electric cars by 2030 and 350 million electric cars by 2040 with each car requiring several Kg's of Cobalt in their batteries. | loganair
25/2/2018 10:03 | Demand for nickel. Let's assume for a second that the substitution project remains in draft and that cobalt remains indispensable. Around Ninety-five percent of the world's supply of cobalt comes as a by-product of nickel or copper. As illustrated by John Petersen, "Every year, the world's nickel miners sell $14.58 billion of nickel and $1.05 billion of cobalt, which means cobalt revenue represents 6.7% of their total revenue. It's even worse with copper miners who sell $68.4 billion of copper and $0.92 billion of cobalt, which means cobalt revenue represents 1.3% of their total revenue." | duxy786
23/2/2018 18:58 | I heard a report today, because the price of Cobalt has tripled in the past 18 months Apple say they are now going to look at going straight to the smaller local miners to get their Cobalt thereby cutting out all the middle men. Apple say they are worried about the future availability of Cobalt due to the expected increase in the use of Cobalt in batteries used for electric vehicles, so they say they want to lock up the supplies they need. Apple say they require 8gms of Cobalt per battery used in their various devices while electric cars need about 1,000 times this amount. | loganair
23/2/2018 07:39 | Loganair Not worth my time replying to you. | s0lis
23/2/2018 07:36 | Logan, give it a rest. Solis clearly will not know that level of detail right now. People do understand the concept of interest, so stop being so patronising. Your opinions lack any insight and really aren't of much interest, which is the reason some people are frustrated by you. | madengland_
23/2/2018 00:54 | Thanks S0lis for the info, very interesting! Some people will use anything for their deramp:) won't be surprised if your info and my above will be interpreted to try to make as much as possible negativity:) | tadastadska
23/2/2018 00:03 | S0lis - Interestwise, a very good loan by Amur. By any chance do you know how much the loan is likely to be for. If the loan is say for $50mln, even at around just 3% interest will still mean Amur paying $1.5mln per year in interest or do you know if Amur have a grace period, so for example after taking the loan out, they can pay the interest they owe after the mine is in production? | loganair
22/2/2018 23:46 | Tad I don't know why people go on about the road. Those that were at the meeting on 28th July 2017 to alter the M&A can confirm the discussion I had with RY on the financing of the road and how it would work. Please see my posting on iii on 30/7/17. I should have stressed more clearly that RY was saying that 100% of the finance would be provided as soft loans by different bodies. What is LIBOR now ? 2.4% and they will only charge 1/2% over LIBOR - cheaper than UK inflation. They had the topographic and hydrological details in April 2017 (RNS) and have said on a couple of occasions that they have requested cost estimates from some road contractors. I would not be surprised if the final plans are not completed. Not an issue. Closed book. I believe he is now dealing with the rest of the finance required, mine plan to high grade the start and pay off loans, offtake agreements, further drilling to confirm more high grade areas, etc. | s0lis
22/2/2018 23:17 | Could the below be a reason for delayed plan to publish PFS by RY? Perhaps they had it all ready but been asked to include more details, calculations | tadastadska
22/2/2018 21:56 | loganair You really appear to me to be a child of a lesser God! A very minor God. It's obvious to any sane person that AMC does not have skill sets to develop the mine to production stage. They will either have to employ the people with the appropriate skill sets or they will JV or be taken over by a company that has. All that pretence about asking the questions that others in your classes at school were too afraid to ask because they would look stupid is clearly a cover for your posts on this board. Phuh! You certainly have made yourself look stupid. I have against my better judgment resisted putting you on filter. But now I have ... filleted you. Silence is bliss! | ciao4niao
22/2/2018 21:35 | Mr Negative here - Another reason I can see why AMC's share price is where it is, is because the cost of production is a long way from being established and therefore the risk is not closely link to the price of the commodity which creates uncertainty. AMC have discovered a huge deposit and I know I keep harping on about this, it takes vast amounts of funds, expertise and time to develop a mine is why I think AMC will need a major producer to buy in and do the actual mining. The question I would like to ask is what expertise does AMC have in bringing the mine into production? | loganair
22/2/2018 18:07 | flug - Your posts show you have no understanding of me what so ever. If you read posts from other threads I'm on I've posted both positive and negative on the same board. In the past on this board I have written many positive posts. Mentioned has been JRS, for a year and a half, most my posts were very negative and critical about Russia while for the past year have been increasingly positive. | loganair
