Is guilt-free meat possible?https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/07/03/lab-grown-chicken-meat-eating-guilt/

Good spot. Last time I noticed this kind of volume, it was followed by an rns announcing Jim Mellon had bought a million. ANIC shares are basically gratis and even more so now considering the approval that means Good Meat and Upside cultivated meat has been given the green light in the US.

Useful to know. Thank you for the correction on the VC space.

ANIC aren't the only ones doing this, the space is riddled with VC. It isn't even the only opportunity listed in London, where BSFA has produced cultivated pork. What ANIC has is a diverse portfolio that might contain a big winner and a couple of solid companies, along with mostly also-rans.

I thought that was interesting with the lab grown leather company which had Kering (Prada) as a cornerstone investor. Aiming at the high margin luxury market not as the school shoe one

This is a great point. Mellon and co. have mentioned they have learned from the beyond meat approach which didnt quite take en masse. Firstly and probably by necessity the cultivated meat will only at the outset be available in high end Michelin star resturants (two at least signed up). Except of course in Singapore where you can buy it in the butchers. Also worth noting that besides ANIC, there is no one else doing this, they have a clean runway to any success. Finally also worth remembering that are not just meat.

It is like any other technology; uptake will be a function of age. The old will resist, new consumers will know no different. It will see adoption from the rich first, necessarily, which gives it cache and it becomes aspirational.

Unless there’s a physical limit on the possible cost reductions (clue: if nature can, so can we) then it’s simply a case of “how steep are the experience curves?” from the Economics pov.

“Frankenstein meat” might be a bigger hindrance but I doubt that’s a winning defensive strategy among secular populations.

Cenkos-

Agronomics has noted the approval of cultivated meat for sale in the US, which clearly represents a significant milestone for sector as a whole. Two companies, UPSIDE Foods and Eat Just have achieved the three regulatory milestones from the USDA and FDA to allow the sale of their cell-cultivated chicken to consumers in the US. We also note Agronomics’ portfolio company, Good Dog Food’s partnership with Pets at Home in the UK, aimed at providing cultivated meat-based dog food and a separate portfolio company, CellX raising $6.5m in new funding to support the development of cultivated meat in China. We maintain our Buy Recommendation.  UPSIDE Foods – UPSIDE Foods’ cultivated chicken, will be initially available for sale at San Francisco’s Bar Crenn restaurant. Production of the chicken will be based at UPSIDE’s innovation centre near San Francisco, using smaller-scale processes. Going forward, the company notes its large-scale cultivators can produce up to 50,000lbs of meat per year with a projected expansion capacity up to 400,000lbs per year.  GOOD Meat – GOOD Meat’s (Eat Just’s cultivated meat division) cultivated chicken, which has been available in Singapore since 2020, will be sold in the US to Chef José Andrés, owner of the José Andrés Group restaurant chain. The USDA has approved production of the chicken from GOOD Meat’s demonstration plant in Alameda, California and at its contract manufacturing partner, JOINN Biologics.  Good Dog Food – Agronomics’ portfolio company, Good Dog Food (GDF), has announced its partnership with UK retailer, Pets at Home, which contributed to GDF’s £3.6m seed round. Pets at Home is expected to support GDF’s development of cultivated meat for the pet food sector, helping to launch and scale up the distribution of the GDF’s products.  CellX – Agronomics’ China-based portfolio company, CellX has announced it has raised $6.5m in new funds to accelerate the development of its cultivated meat products. Based in Shanghai, CellX is aiming to develop cultivated meat products for the Chinese and global markets. Agronomics has invested $2.05m into CellX since its inception in 2020 and following this round will carry its investment at $3.61m, with this announcement generating a c$1m uplift in value. The overall internal rate of return on Agronomics’ investment if 62%.  Investment thesis – We see significant potential in the cellular agriculture sector (and closely related markets), driven by increasing awareness of the environmental impact of livestock farming along with a growing trend towards alternative protein sources. Agronomics offers investors exposure to this largely private sector while its early-stage investments provide maximum upside as the sector develops. Given the unique investment opportunity Agronomics provides the public markets in a sector which we believe has significant value creation potential, we believe the current discount to NAV offers a strong entry point. We maintain our Buy recommendation

I too think milk is the first big winner, for several reasons:

1. Massive adoption of non-mammal milk already.
2. Proven that people will pay a premium.
3. (I presume) will be produced without lactose.
4. Dairy farming is a highly inefficient way to turn land into food.
5. It is a liquid so none of the "structural issues.

I can see collagen and leather also making strides.

Back to the RNS, the more jurisdictions and companies, whether we are an investee or not, that get approval the better for us. It should be noted that most of our companies will fail, we just need one big winner and a few so so winners and we are good to go.

I enjoyed your summary. Although Im not sure how this move is a weakening. There is understandably in the media an unflinching focus on the meat side of things but this is a portion of their approach. Aside from the meat we have, clothing (leather), pet food, milk (likely to be the big first win on the pipeline) eggs and microbes.

The inclusion of hydrogen as a product is a positive. Its all already a well diversified portfolio and this adds to that. These are all somewhat speculative. If they hold one big winner the entire investment will be justified.
