Todays local newspaper the 'Sunderland Echo' believes that Arriva will soon lose its independence, exit price at £4.00 +, not sure where they got that info, interesting though.

I would agree with Neefax, looks as though there's something round the corner insofar as takeover / merger action. The venture capitalists would love the cash flow from the buses trains and disposal of retail car sales business, any ideas anyone.

I wonder about all the share buy backs, there something not quite right about the sheer volume and cash expended. I suggest that its either a prelude to going private, i.e management buyout or venture capitalist/management deal, what exit price though, thats a 64 million dollar question, I guess £4 per share or thereabouts.

On a p/e of around 7.5 and such good prospects ARI really is a very good buy at the moment.

IMHO.

Slinger1...just people bailing out having taken the divi.

Expect share buy backs soon which will support the price.

prospects are good with congestion charges expanding nationwide as well.

Took a good long look at ARI this morning and have concluded that it is a strong buy for a number of reasons.
The recent figures were extremely good.
The company is bound to be benefiting fron the congestion charge in London where it runs thousands of buses.
The company has pledged to keep buying back its own shares.
It is still on a very low p/e of around 8.

So prospects good...current numbers good...share buy back continuing.

I very very nearly bought a load this morning as this goes EX D tomorrow but didnt coz of the geo-political situation.

I bet myself £100 i took the wrong choice.

We shall see.

Divi is a biggy, at 12.8p
I guess a few people will be watching closely in the final hour today to see whether it's worth playing for..

Arriva may be down...but that conjestion charge in London, where they operate 20 percent of the buses, is helping them out in a big way as road users become ppublic transport users.....should see great returns in the next year....any opinions

I was on the day thread when this lot came up :

the Rail stuff was just on the BBC news........gotta be a screaming short now for the medium term....

Rail cpys have to:

Cut costs

Expect lower (or no) subsidies

Any subsidy is performance related (they are all stuffed!)

Charge higher fares to cover costs (rail cpy statement) which will drive away pax

Rail cpys have a choice...either cut staff (strike action.....no dosh....go bust) or cut timetables "drastically".... no pax , no profit, go bust.

Or am I reading this wrong?

short......

mick p - 15 Dec'02 - 22:23 - 41 of 41 edit

Oh sorry I forgot,

J Prescot (dep prime minister, 3 jags, handy with his fists) will wait until 2 or 3 parts of british rail (and I bet he still thinks of it that way) go bust and then re-nationalise it. It would make him a working class socialist hero....

again......

(copied across from dict)

Heard a piece on Radio 5 today saying that Labour are going to crack down hard on poorly performing rail cpys, with higher fines. More interestingly, the subsidies are going to be substancially reduced......

yum yum yum

(exc spelling , chablis induced)

Will attempt to find the piece and post here.........

Personally I see a falling wedge which is usually considered quite bullish. If there is no significant breakout soon it'll probably head down becasue it is very close to the apex now.

Went short on this Fri at 273, but will be ready to jump out if it bounces too high....top of downtrend channel is close so I think it has a bit further to fall......long term though this seems to want to go sub £2....
