There has been an overwhelming rise in the sale of marijuana since 2017. There has been a $6.7 billion legal marijuana sale in 2016 which is a 34% rise since 2017.
Both venture capitals and private equity funds have invested millions of dollars in the legal cannabis sector.
1. MedMen Capital
MedMen group is a consultancy in the cannabis sector, of which MenMen is a venture capital. It has partnered wit Wicklow Capital which is founded by former GETCO founder. MedMen Opportunity was started at $100 million AUM (2016) and has grown to an additional $30 million in 2017.
2. Casa Verde
Backed and founded by Snoop Dogg, this company publicised investment for $25 million in 2015. It has raised around $33 million as of Jan 3 2018, the fund has invested in Eaze- also referred to as ‘Uber’. It is the biggest investor in Colorado based weed packaging providers, Green Bits, Trellis.
3. Privateer Holdings
This private equity firm has been the first of its kind in cannabis business to cross the $100 million mark to fundraise for raising $129 million, as per Crunchbase. Medical producer Tilray, The Goodship- which manufactures cannabis infused candies and high quality baked goods on which you can get more information.
4. Poseidon Asset Management
The fund has an asset holding of $8 million as of February 2017. Poseidon Asset Management was founded by Emily and Morgan Paxhia. They also invest in data SaaS solutions, analytics in the cannabis industry, agricultural technology.
5. Phyto Partners
A $10 million fund was announced in 2015 and according to the SEC filing it received $2.2 million. This venture capital mostly focuses on data & technology. Portfolio for Boca Raton included data analytics firm New Frontier. They are also the biggest investor in Flowhun which is a business management platform of the cannabis sector.
