Gerard Arpey, Chairman and Chief Executive of AMR Corp., Monday said he is confident that both the U.S. Transportation Department and European Union authorities will grant the company's American Airlines antitrust immunity, which would allow OneWorld Alliance carriers to cooperate on scheduling and revenue sharing on trans-Atlantic routes.
"We are confident of a positive outcome on both sides of the Atlantic," Arpey told reporters at a OneWorld Alliance news conference in Kuala Lumpur.
He said current circumstances are dramatically different from the last time American Airlines and British Airways applied for immunity "because it is an open playing field across the Atlantic now."
Separately, British Airways Chief Executive Willy Walsh said that "the case has significant merit."
