2hoggy,

Same as you my friend.

As I implied, I come from a working class family in a deprived coastal town in England and have worked very hard & invested carefully over the years to become comfortable now in my older years (now over 50).

But, like anyone else, I am not in the business to lose money from here. Happily, Shell and this sector look safest in that respect in late cycle dynamics.

Shell currently looks set to be a stellar stock pick for 2018Q2 and beyond. Even this week's 2018Q1 should be received well and point towards an improving free cash flow profile for the year ahead.

With FCFP improvements enabling further key reductions in gearing, share buybacks look set to be initiated sometime soon, and hopefully before the share price rises too quickly. This in my one main annoyance with buybacks - they always seem to occur when a company's share price is doing well and are therefore comparatively expensive. A frustrating paradox, but I do understand why ...

With $75 Brent as of tonight, I doubt we'll see a low RDSB share price again anytime soon, so Shell may as well get on with their buyback soon. :)

My view on life coming from a poor background was to work hard, save, take some risks and not spend all your money on the latest fashion or want.

I have made more money on here than running my business at the same time I have lost even more,ca sara,ca,sara..

My problem was not selling..

Darwin suggested the base case.

It is how you apply yourself that matters.

I currently have a great, highly regarded colleague who came from those very slums in a different Indian city.

He has done very well.

The same can also apply to anyone from a poor coastal town in England. Or any UK area of deprivation. Of whatever class of family, except for the silver-spoon brigade who don't need to try.

We, Shell investors have worked hard for our portfolios, and will soon be rewarded.

All the best,

FJ :)

It is more luck outside the market than in it. A neighbour of mine, the same age, dropped down dead at the beginning of the month so his luck ran out as it does for all of us. Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger put most of their success down to luck. The former talks about winning the ovarian lottery by being born into a middle class family in the wealthiest nation in the world. You are not going to do so well being born in the Calcutta slums where the chances of building any capital in the first place is extremely limited.

For an equity portfolio to be successful over the very long term requires a great deal of luck as calls on capital, for whatever reason, often come into play. I farmed for 30 years going backwards in real terms so gave up to try this instead. I have been lucky to have been exposed to one of the longest bull markets in history without needing to call on the capital. Luck is the number 1 factor.

Using the rule of 72 at 12pc growth your money doubles every 6 years, 10pc every 7 (.2) years, 9pc every 8 years and at 8pc every 9 years.
