I use IG predominantly through the web and have only ever had one problem which was resolved immediately and without fuss.

Its online streaming prices are pretty good for the UK but out of touch for anything other than indices in the States.

IG give what I consider good account terms and if you can show liquid assets e.g. other broking account balances afford what I believe to be pretty generous margin terms.

On larger accounts they also pay base minus 1% on any free equity in your account.

I haven't used the others so can't make any direct comparisons - hope this helps.

Technet,
I have an Index Direct account. I opened it to give the ability to short shares and trade the ftse, Dow and NAS. So far I have only used it for intraday index trades. I don't think this is original but I think the spreads on individual stocks are too wide for short term positions and I have so far not used them for this. Stops preset at the time of placing the bet give limited exposure. I guess you could descibe their manner as brusque or perhaps more charitably business-like. Personally I'm cool with that. So far the longest I've had to wait is four rings of the phone and I'm pretty happy with that too! I also asked for e-mail confirmation of bets and these have so far arrived within 2mins max and I wait for these and check them immediately. I also keep open a window during the day with a selection of live streaming prices.
Overall? So far so good. When I grow up to be a big boy I think I will move to cfd's but at the moment this is fine.
Hope that is what you wanted.
Regards
Rob

Many thanks chaps. Both links have a lot of good info.

Also .... I believe only Cantor and IG offer online trading. I cannot get the IG dealing window to work through a proxy firewall (IG have confirmed that some firewalls will not allow you to run parts of their web service properly) which is why I want to change to someone else. Has anyone used the Cantor system through a firewall?

I use City/IG and Financial Spreads - all much of a muchness and never had a serious prob with any of them. Also use CMC deal4free.com for CFDs, have heard only good things about GNI - so all fine I think.

I think from a web point of view, IG are best amongst the spreaders for net trading, but I always use the phone anyway.

IG.

Pretty slick, however I feel they have an attitude problem in their manerism but that could be down to pressure of the job, after all it is a betting shop.

Keep records and if possible Tape recordings just in case of a problems.

Can't comment on the others however, I am looking @ Cantor but too early top comment.

Try this, it's a brilliant overview site on spread trading, written by Angus McCrone, who does weekly columns on this subject in the Evening Standard.

TechNet,

I am also interested in finding the best value/service in spread betting (also CFDs). As you say, there have been a number of related threads (also on ETrade) but it is difficult to discern any concensus.

This might be of interest - it includes an interesting comparison between spread betting and CFD trading:

I guess a lot of people here use at least one of these spread betters.
If you've time, could you please post your comments on the company you use, listing pros and cons of the service they provide.

I have used IG Index in the past, but as their new web dealing software doesn't work through our proxy firewall, I am forced to look elsewhere.

Many thanks, Paul.
P.S. I know there are other threads that have covered spread betting in the past, but I couldn't find one that discusses all 3 of these companies. Cheers.
P.P.S. If their is a firm that does small denomination web based CFD trading, then this is also of interest. Cheers again.
