31/12/2002 21:52 | FOX, kingfish - 31 Dec'02 - 21:45 - 244 of 245 edit I discovered as a Labour MP that a love of liberty is no longer a popular cause. It is too straightforward to appeal to the modern mind. Unfortunately, liberty has nothing to do with majority sentiment, government initiatives or sucking up to pressure groups. Liberty is the doctrine that urges society to leave people alone to do as they wish, unless there is some truly overwhelming reason for stopping them. Foxes have been chased by packs of hounds in England since at least the 15th century, so any legal ban would be novel rather than necessary. Britain is a mobocracy, where an elected elite governs and seeks to placate the uninterested masses. As there are no votes in liberty and no rewards to be gained from believing in it, there is a high likelihood that any liberty can be capriciously taken away, once those exercising it attract the hostility of influential, well-funded bellyachers. Foxhunters, I fear, are about to learn how little their vaunted ancient liberties are worth. | kingfish
31/12/2002 21:45 | Kingfish sorry to hear that, but foxhunting has a minimal impact on the number of foxes so it isn`t going to stop such attacks. Their predation on rabbits, rats and voles, all of which are considerable pests is of positive benefit to the farmer. Foxes also eat earthworms, insects, beetles and fallen fruit as well as usefully scavenging the carcasses of wild and domestic animals and birds. To put the statistics into perspective, only 1% of lambs are lost to foxes, compared with between 10 to 24% lost to disease, hypothermia, malnutrition and bad management of living conditions. Foxes are indeed the scavengers of the countryside taking the opportunity to carry away ill, dead or dying casualties and are often seen in the lambing fields hoping to scavenge afterbirth. | i`m a fox
31/12/2002 21:15 | Make My Day ? LOL | gerry2
31/12/2002 20:57 | the idea of people dressed in coustumes and chasing an animal with with such brutal cruelty seems aged. does anyone know how much it cost to organise? how much does the the whole uniform cost? are you allowed to go and foxmurdering with jeans and trainers? | lovingmary
31/12/2002 20:35 | Ridgeback we don`t need chickens (except Kentucky fried) we`ve taken over the towns!!! A 1996 MAFF publication stated that only 0.4 % of lambs die from accidents, dog attacks and all other animal predation. This extremely small number includes those killed by foxes. Indeed, it has been said on many occasions that shepherds will blame the fox for killing a lamb when what has actually happened is that the fox has scavenged from one that was already dead. Also, with regard to the favourite accusation of foxes killing chickens - whoever heard of a fox having a key to open a secure poultry pen? The fox is a friend to the farmer as a predator of rats and rabbits and assists in cleaning up fields by eating the afterbirth during lambing. He is also a predator of deer fawns that begs the question of why there is a need to kill foxes when it is thought by some that deer populations are too high. But that's another story. | i`m a fox
31/12/2002 12:42 | Fly man meself. And no, not the chalk stream wuffter who creates flys that look like a pellet! LOL! What's wrong with ordering things according to priority? Time management old boy! | abix47
31/12/2002 12:37 | Farsight the brown smog isn't co2. More O3 SOx and NOx derived. But you digress it was a point about degrees or wrongness and the energy & time levelled to right the wrong. And here we had a big wrong that so many of us could actually do something about. You go on to point the finger at others creating a greater generic wider pollution of the air. OK so we do the same....avoid dealing with the produce of these countries you finger. Same difference....massiv so i think your reason for not opposing HWH as you stated above (U don't agree but see bigger fish to fry) cannot stand. how did you know my Pop was a GI? :o) oh no I've introduced 'fishing with maggots'!. Who will start that thread!? :O) | moregas
31/12/2002 12:20 | Nice little anal'ogy ! But it is very true what you say ,they were there first and they do need to eat. Since a lot of what of what used to be wild and untroubled by us uprights , things got along just fine. We have claimed their territory , then call them pests and hunt them down . Strange world isn't it ! | zuke. |
