05/8/2002 15:52 | Absolutely crawling for me today now US is open. It is like watching the world go by in slow motion | jumpin
03/8/2002 00:40 | 14 years as an expat - very impressive! Not sure if you are aware but the locals can now use 10% cpf as half the deposit on a condo. Local commentators are expecting this to give some boost to the private property market. On the other hand, I know some people who sell mortgages and they work 7 full days a week attempting to meet their targets. This could be due to opening up to foreign banks, lack of demand, or too high targets! No idea which. HSBC, one of the new entrants are offering 2.75 for the first 2 years, 3 for the next 3, then 4 thereafter. Good luck whatever you decide. | orchid
03/8/2002 00:14 | am in somerset orchid, not somerset road.but the wife keeps on about buying a flat there as she is a singaporean.i was an expat for about 14 years all around the far east | royce
03/8/2002 00:02 | royce, I was working as an expat but now a self-employed PR. Been here for about 3 years. take it you are around this area too? On GNI, I think I maybe a lighter user than most as I only have news plus three or four L2's open. One is VOD which is going all the time but the others are less volatile. I also notice with ADVFN2 streaming on a few big US tickers that it doesn't stream constantly. It seems to come in pulses. Guess it is due to the amount of trades in the US rather than ADVFN2. | orchid
02/8/2002 13:50 | Right now matthew, is fine, but often does go wrong around now. Interestingly, CMC/ADVFN went down exactly on payroll figs for me. | spectoacc
02/8/2002 13:46 | Terrible for me can any other users report problems as GNI think I am the only one to ahve had problems during this period. | matthewa

02/8/2002 13:29 | I expect it to be worse than ever with the US employment data in a few minutes. | mug punter
02/8/2002 13:14 | jl202, many thanks for that. I have only noticed CPU so not sure about memory, I will check next time. Meanwhile I will have a look at memturbo.. | orchid
02/8/2002 13:09 | Incidentally, defragging ram takes about 5 seconds, during which time performance takes a break,, | jl202
02/8/2002 13:06 | Memory issue: orchid, I notice you said about when you have to reboot that the cpu goes to 100%, did you happen to check whether the memory was being used 100% as well? Zero free ram would certainly cause the processor to churn and would be symptomatic of leaky software. Hopefully the updated version will fix the problem. Buying additional memory will just delay the inevitable. There are numerous pieces of software available that will "defrag" your ram, one that I used to use is memturbo which cost I think about $17. Then, when your ram gets below a specific target you can force a defrag, which would avoid the need to reboot the software and/or machine. The memturbo software itself is a nuisance and only a workaround solution, but will keep you going till they plug GNI's leak, or you buy another Gig of ram ;) ,, | jl202
02/8/2002 11:50 | Ah, it's a memory prob is it? I have same with CMC, around US open, starts to take an age just to open a ticket. GNI usually lasts a little longer, but L2 often slips behind. I've got about 524MB (don't ask me why such an odd number) on 1.2g machine, but getting a fancy new 2.26G Dell soon. Any way to clear the memory without a reboot, in same way as you can clear temp internet folder? | spectoacc
02/8/2002 11:46 | royce - Yes I was told it was my line. WHich is a 128k Leasded Line from CS comms I am on the verge of swithcing over to BT dedeicated for $6k per month but it will be well worth it if it works as it is costing me about $10-15k a month becasue I cant execute trades properly. | matthewa
02/8/2002 11:40 | cheers for that orchid.are you an ex/pat?or a local. | royce
02/8/2002 11:26 | Royce, sorry I miscalculated. It's 65.90 sing, which is more like 25 pounds. My PC is 1.8Ghz. | orchid
02/8/2002 11:23 | orchid, is that about $100? also what size is your cpu. matthewa, did he not tell you as well that it was your line? | royce
02/8/2002 11:17 | Luckily for me there is now a fair amount of broadband competition here. I use Pacific Internet broadband. About 30gbp per month for 24hr 512k access. I use it all day and I have no complaints. Not sure if they have a similar service in Thailand. | orchid
02/8/2002 11:03 | Mug Punter - Thank you for informative posting. I just spoke to Tobin in IT and he assures me institutions do not have priority even though it might seem like that. Orchid - I trade from Thailand and about to get a dedicated line from BT of all people Can I ask who you use? | matthewa

02/8/2002 10:42 | I access from Singapore using broadband with 512mb and XP Professional. Everything ok for a while but now experiencing the slowdowns as well. In my case the CPU goes to 100% with Touch taking all it can get. If I close and restart Touch it is ok. I don't need to reboot the PC. | orchid
02/8/2002 10:24 | mug punter nice post thinking about priority placing i think this may happen it depends on which server you are using. as for the business development,i think they have the "for sale" signs up so the more clients the higher the price? | royce
02/8/2002 09:54 | Matthew, Yes GNI do have the rather annoying habit of trying to give you the impression that you are the only person having problems when you speak to them. I believe virtually everybody is having problems these days at times of busy US activity. I believe however that their unprofessional business development policy is somewhat to blame here. They are continually trying to boost their business with advertising, seminars and of course their recruitment agents. What they fail to do is to upgrade their servers and other hardware to accomodate this increased load and always fall behind the curve regarding the provision of an adequately robust platform. Frankly it would serve them right if new users just packed it in. Their rather calculated policy seems to be - lets maximise our cash flow by delaying the necessary upgrades as long as we can get away with and if it costs our clients money then sod them. They could never get away with this with institutional clients of course but with private clients they think they can. Matthew, regarding the leased line I would forget it. The real problem seems to be the order book entry system. This is part of their main Fidessa system and it just gets choked with big program trades, for example after the release of big US data. I would not be at all surprised if their institutional clients have priority in placing orders over us when things get busy. Having the leased line may mean you get reliable level 2 and indices but whats the point of that if you cannot trade. | mug punter
01/8/2002 21:15 | matt - I'm having big problems as well. Yesterday all my US share prices just froze but the uk feed was ok. As I trade MSFT quite a bit I called them to see whether their US feed was down but they said everything was fine, I just couldn't trade at all and it's been like this for weeks now. A while back I got caught out with a bad trade because of the price delay, the market had moved up and I bought some MSFT for 30p below mkt price because of the delay. The sooner they get it sorted the better as it's costing them lost commission. | rb5
01/8/2002 18:46 | forwood - Cheers for that. | matthewa
01/8/2002 18:11 | matthewa - given that lines are dear and memory is cheap, I'd go for memory first. BTW iDealing are launching a CFD product, with a pilot group beginning next week. Will let you know how it is! | forwood |
