Dxns need a snappy catch line. Don't let online purchases make you sigh. View and try with Dixons before you buy. Price match guaranteed. ;-)

@mikepompeyfan......They are already/should be at same price or lower.

It is worth remembering that the darling "John Lewis" fortunes really improved and carried on improving when they introduced the policy of "never knowingly undersold"

It is unacceptable to allow Amazon or anyone else for that matter a price advantage

Agreed Tim. Once the customer is in the shop offer them a price match if necessary to conclude the deal imo. Don't let anyone walk away.

Interesting story about Best Buy.

I think it shows that done correctly Amazon can be beat.

Dixons really need to use their advantages over Amazon AO and other internets at every opportunity.

The fact that you can call locally, view compare and get to use your product and go home with it the same day is something they can not compete with and if the price is the same why use them.

Maxidi - know on completion of the merger, one dixon share will get you 0.155 of a share in dixons carphone......i.e 6.45 dixons shares equals 1 carphone share.

So 55p + 47p = 102p divided by 2 = 51p. Is that correct ?

The cpw share price currently values each dixons share at over 47p....360p cpw shareprice by merger completion would be 55p a share.

I think/hope the pessimists/scare-mongers may have had their day now and the market is starting to look forward to the possibility of potential future rewards.

News of the Carphone Warehouse and Dixons merger comes as little surprise since the two have been in talks for months, but it will leave many wondering what the implications are for consumers.

Now that many consumer products are becoming connected – think of the newly launched Vanhawks Valour smart bike, which connects with a smartphone app and brings GPS directly to the handle bars – this merger will no doubt open up opportunities to offer consumers a seamless experience for the age of 'the internet of things'.

Being the first retail and commerce merger of this size, the new Dixons Carphone company is poised to help consumers begin their journey into this new connected future.

It has positioned its outlets as ahead of the curve and the 'go to' place for products and connectivity services. This will give them an advantage over other brands, which will take some time to catch up.

In order to keep this position in the market, the company must aim to deliver an improved digital to in-store experience. For example, by optimising its retail networks, it will have the opportunity to create an outstanding click-and-collect offer in all 3,000 stores. It will be interesting to see how Dixons Carphone weaves digital through the customer journey to engage with the customers to whom it is selling this 'connected world'.

I think a few years back the merger would have had no chance but now with the likes of amazon and the other internet company's and the supermarkets competition is stronger than ever and there is no reason to block.

Good news, as they know the combined group will clean up and they can do sweet FA about it, as usual.

Nice article HMRC. Dxns do seem more street savvy now. The current advertising about the World Cup and the shops with highlighted kitchen equipment on the back of the TV cookery programme trend, would seem to prove that. Even the website seems a bit snappier to me compared to what it was like a year ago.

2010.....

The UK & Ireland division had a strong start to the year as it gained significant market share through the World Cup, particularly in Televisions as well as benefitting from the launch of the Apple iPad.

UK retail sales growth hits a 10 year high in April

UK retail sales grew by 6.9% in April compared with the same month a year earlier, new figures show, making it the strongest annual rise in ten years.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) also said retail sales jumped by 1.3% between March and April beating analysts forecasts for a 0.5% rise.

Food sales during the late Easter holiday made a significant contribution to the overall figure, the ONS said.

They were 6.3% higher in April against a year earlier, and 3.6% up on March.

Non-food sales rose by 6.5% compared with a year earlier, but were down 0.4% on the month.

The annual rise in food sales was the biggest since January 2002, and were helped by a combination of better weather and sales promotions.

Increases in the price of food were limited to 0.9% in April, compared with 1.8% a month earlier.

Quarterly retail sales have now grown for 14 months in a row, the ONS added.

'Purchasing power'

Howard Archer, chief UK and European economist at IHS Global Insight, described the latest set of figures as "mightily impressive", adding "this bodes very well for GDP growth in the second quarter".

He said: "The fundamentals for consumers are currently improving overall, and they should continue to do so over the coming months as employment rises further and earnings growth likely trends higher than inflation, thereby lifting purchasing power.

"The strong housing market is also supportive to retail sales."

And Ian Geddes, UK head of retail at Deloitte, said: "It is encouraging to finally see some strong figures in the food sector, as this remains a challenging market for the large grocers who are vigorously responding to consumers' changing retail habits and, are currently implementing significant structural reorganisation.

"This is clearly a long race and the large grocers are repositioning themselves to win over customers in the new, more complex era of multichannel retailing."

The retail figures come a day after official figures showed inflation increased to 1.8% in April, up from a four year low of 1.6% in March.

Meanwhile, the latest set of figures for average wage growth showed earnings grew by 1.7% in the year to March.

Currys: heatwave sees race to buy ice cream makers, juicers and more
Currys & PC World has seen a huge surge in sales of summer-ready products as Brits embrace the sunshine.

On May 16, the electrical retailer reported a 59% rise in the sales of fans compared with the previous week, with ice cream makers up by 25%. It has also enjoyed week-on-week sales increases in juicers (up 80%), air-conditioning products (up 175%) and beer fridge sales (up 36%).

Jordan Byers, assistant category manager for refrigeration & seasonal at Currys & PC World, said: "Brits have been stocking up on fans and air conditioning units to keep cool and beer fridges have also seen a big increase in sales as everyone gets prepared for a weekend of barbecues in the garden."
