Chatt Rooms
Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007 By CYNTHIA ROSENFELD Article ToolsPrintEmail Think of a trip to Cambodia and you think of Angkor Wat. It's not likely that you'll picture elegant seaside resorts. But that might begin to change with the opening of Knai Bang Chatt, www.knaibangchatt.com, an 11-room property that resurrects some of the oceanfront elegance characteristic of the French colonial era and popular with affluent Khmers until the outbreak of civil war. Nestled amid lush vegetation in the old resort community of Kep (or Kep-sur-Mer as it was known to the French), Knai Bang Chatt is a roughly three-hour, mostly coastal drive from Phnom Penh and is the brainchild of Belgians Jef Moons and Boris Vervoordt. While making their own pilgrimage to Angkor in 2003, the intrepid duo took a detour and immediately saw the restoration potential of Kep's decaying French villas. They bought up four adjacent houses and set about creating an unexpected haven.

Of the three residential buildings (the fourth houses offices and a kitchen), the most striking is the multiterraced Blue Villa. Designed in 1962, the structure is a splendid surviving example of New Khmer Architecture, the modernist style of building that briefly flourished after the country's independence from France. Guests can book a room there or in the other two villas. Each of the three properties can also be rented whole and have between two and five bedrooms each.

Although modest in size, Knai Bang Chatt provides all the activities of a much larger resort. Among these are excursions to islands lying close off shore, boat trips with local fishermen or tours of nearby Bokor National Park. Yoga classes, meditation sessions and Khmer massage are available. There's also an expansive sea-facing infinity pool. The French cuisine (with a Khmer touch) uses fresh local seafood and produce and is superb. Menus are drawn up in consultation with guests, and meals are served on terraces or in the open-air dining pavilion. The communal areas at Knai Bang Chatt are appointed with a mix of Art Deco ornaments and furniture and Khmer bronzes sourced by Vervoordt in his other life as an antiques dealer. But his best pieces are probably the comfy double canopy beds, placed on prime sand facing the Gulf of Thailand. As an antidote to the crowds and touts of Angkor Wat, you could ask for nothing finer.

Asians, Europeans Eye Cambodia Oil

Scores of Asian and European companies have expressed an interest in tapping Cambodia's oil wealth, though it will be years before the country realizes the benefits from its offshore reserves, a government official said.
Te Duong Tara, the director-general of Cambodian National Petroleum Authority, told The Associated Press Tuesday that the country was still assessing the situation and was a "long way" from reaching a production phase, AP reported.
Impoverished Cambodia was set abuzz in 2005 following the discovery of oil off the southwestern coast by US energy giant Chevron Corp.
Since then, Te Duong Tara said oil firms from Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, France, Indonesia and China, have been lining up for licenses to explore other potential blocks in the Cambodian waters.
The Chinese state-owned oil company CNOOC Ltd. is presently negotiating terms of agreement with the Cambodian government, which could be signed in the near future, he said without elaborating.
"We are bringing in highly experienced operators," Te Duong Tara said on the sidelines of a petroleum seminar.
Chevron, meanwhile, is conducting exploration drillings in Block A where it first discovered oil, a site located about 87 miles southwest of the seaport of Sihanoukville, which is about 115 miles southwest of the capital, Phnom Penh.
The company discovered crude oil in 2005 in four wells in the block and has plans to drill 10 more through 2007.
Te Duong Tara said that oil revenues could have a "profound" impact on the future of Cambodia, where 35 percent of the country's 14 million people live below national poverty line of 50 cents a day.

welcome rambulas, looking forward to another year in 2007 that we have enjoyed in 2006, this business has really done well for me, i took a profit on some of my holding at 1.02 and wished i had not, felt a right plonker buying back in after seeing the directors all buying, and serious buying, not just a few token shares, so my view is that they must be expecting good results and a good future.

A little note in The Independent's Market Report this morning:-

"The Manchester-based insurance broker CBG Group held steady at 131.5p, despite two director share purchases. Laurie Turnbull, its chairman, led the way by acquiring 33,000 shares in the company at 130p, while Michael Askew, the chief executive, bought 30,000 at the same price."
