In a buy note Liberum said|:

ABF offers investors compelling exposure to secular growth trends in retail. Primark’s brand of fast fashion at affordable prices coupled with a buzzy and trendy shopping experience resonates with a wide spread of consumers. ABF’s deliberate and considered expansion into Continental Europe demonstrates that the concept is portable.

We expect similar results in the US as the group dips its toe into the market with 8 stores in the Northeast. We estimate that Primark can double sales and profits over the next 5 years boosted by the occasional store parcel. The shakeout in EU sugar should lead to industry consolidation, lower beet prices and cost savings boosting Sugar profits mid-term.

'ABF benefits from sugar prices and US opportunities'

Associated British Foods (ABF) is benefitting from a rebound in sugar prices and opportunities for Primark in the US.

Jefferies analyst James Grzinic retained his ‘hold’ recommendation and target price of £30.10 on the shares, which rose 15p to £34.30 yesterday.

‘The drivers of Associated British Food’s expanding valuation premium are to be found in the recent rebound in sugar prices and the structural opportunity that the US adds to Primark,’ he said.

‘The H1 update will likely confirm the former but on balance valuation is starting to price in quite a lot on both fronts.’

Grizinc said the increase in sugar prices could be affected in the long term by European Union quotas and that ‘UK fiscal policies are increasingly being trained on discouraging an already inflecting sugar consumption’.

Companies that profit from Britain’s sweet tooth plunged as the U.K. unveiled a sugar tax, a surprise move that adds another burden to food and beverage companies grappling with marketing restrictions and a shift toward healthier fare.

Soft-drink makers Britvic Plc and A.G. Barr Plc both declined more than 5 percent in London, while ingredient suppliers Tate & Lyle Plc and Associated British Foods Plc fell as much as 4.9 percent and 1.5 percent, respectively. U.K. Chancellor George Osborne said the levy on the soft-drinks industry will be introduced in two years’ time, in two bands depending on how much sugar is in a drink.
