They always think they can use their dosh and 'influence' to escape the consequences of their law-breaking, that punishment in jail is for 'little people' not loaded glitterati like them. Hope he finally learns some humility now.

They've nailed him..... at last!

3 years in The Scrubs - minimum I hope - on the 'lifers' wing. Let him get well and truly 'shafted'. Should bring him down to earth from his smug penthouse eyrie and champagne parties. Set a suitable lesson for other bent politicos and public figures.

IanW. Aitken again was silly to have perjured himself. He should have ignored his persecuters.

bobalex. But is it something you would like? Other countries leave their polititions alone. If you are rich and famous, it must be a bit boring if you have to take the straight and narrow path of innocence. We will end up with a Cabinet full of boring, arrogant Gordon Browns.

remus, having their every move and action scrutinised is just a way of life for them as it is with all celebs. All they have to do is be honest and keep their noses clean. If they cant do that, then they shouldn't enter politics. Simple init! He got what he deserved, no more, no less. He will also be a much poorer man when the Daily Star have finished with him.

Whilst he was obviously guilty, I think that it is unfortunate that polititions have to have their every move and action scrutinised. We will all be the losers in the long run because anyone with any sense or who wants to earn a bit of money, will avoid politics - at least Conservative politics, and we will be ruled by the less capable and the losers.

Agree with the guilty verdict and glad that his Lordship has gone DOWN. I hope some fellow prisoners in the prison sort him out - chop his balls off.

The House of Lords has already said that he can keep his seat as there is no precedent to remove a peerage. They said that nothing short of treason would do it.

I think it's only commoners, like MPs in the House of Commons, who can't have a criminal record. I think there's a presumption that the Lords of the land will never acquire one, so there are no such restrictions.

I don't think you can sit in the house of lords as a convicted criminal, could be wrong though.

oh well, Jeff is going to appeal. And why not, no skin off his slimy nose, and adds a bit of interest during the year he'll be banged up (if you can call Ford, where he's likely to be in a month or so, being banged up).

Costs of 175k - hardly likely to make him bat an eyelid. Cost to taxpayer of a six week Old Bailey trial? Must be a couple of million I should imagine, once everything is totted up.

Still, the good Lord will be once again soon back in the House of Lords influencing our law of the land - not the most appropriate place for convicted criminals, imo.

Supported by Thatcher, Major and Hague in the recent past - that really makes me sick, and ashamed to vote for the Tories again.

Peter,

i agree with your post 27 about the case against Jeffrey and the timing. He was also the front runner for the mayor of London - and that was the pinnacle (for him) of his ambitions not yet achieved and he put a lot work into it as well. I guess the rug got pulled from underneath him in everything.

However, i still don't trust him and he has (or had) his fingers in all the pies. Sure, he did work for charities but he could pull the heavyweights even outside politics: Harvey Goldsmith, from the music industry to put together a charity concert in no time.
The 4 years won't last and he'll be out but it certainly will tarnish his image, and teach him a lesson, which is what Labour wanted . I guess he will go back to writing novels.

Peter; plus I gather Tony B has decided that an independent enquiry into foot & mouth "unnecessary" - afraid of potential conclusions perhaps???? One wonders what Labour in opposition with a Tory Govt would have had to say on the matter.

And meanwhile of course noone gives any thought at all to the Governments injunctions that they obtained yesterday to prevent any press coverage of the two totally damning reports the safety and cost of their underground plans - even after channel four economist guy says (I quote roughtly):

"
Gordon brown in particular has dug his heals in.
Rational debate has ceased.
Government simply determined to get their own way
"

Funny old world.

Ashtongray, yes, I see the most prominent Tories are now coming out and saying what a liar and scoundrel they 'knew' him to be, & can't see why he did'nt get caught sooner,, seems they back their own regardless till caught, then turn on them.....
