I agree, the share price has stayed around 10% above the offer price since all this was disclosed. This could suggest that some investors believe that a second more palatable offer for HL will come before the deadline of 16.06.2024 I don't reckon it will be much more though. 1200 maybe? They appear to want HL on the cheap and I doubt the consortium will be willing to pay too much more. I reckon it was known a bid at 985 would fail and was just the opening shot.Investors Chronicle are suggesting that this is just the opening round and that even a bid of 1220 (a PE of about 17) would be optimistic? 1220 is Peel Hunts' price target apparently.

Apologies if I have missed information. Outside Peter Hargreaves' 20% of the shares do we know what balance of shares there is between IIs and PIs? I would think the majority of PIs would be opposed to Private Equity taking over because of the ISA status with its avoidance of Income and Capital Gains Tax. Perhaps only those that bought at a very low share price would be interested.

On stagvalley's reference to moving at least some money, is it possible to move individual stocks to another broker as opposed to the account as a whole? I foresee an enormous issue for ii and Bell if transfers are made by the very large number of HL holders. Do posters have experience of Fidelity and its ease of buying and selling? I rarely seem to see reference to them.

THe way I sum this up is its a company that is in a bit of a difficult spot profit growth wise, hence the massive rearing downwards over the years.

IT is however a company that has advantages that are extremely difficult to replicate, in an attractive growing industry.

If its an easy fix for PE, its an easy fix for competent management. If I was the board I wouldn't consider discussions unless a material premium was given above where it's at now. The bidders have timed their bid to capitalise on a share price lull.

NOt surprised PE have bid, as I have stated on here before a PE offer was in the pipeline as it has most of the attributes PE look for, including a cheap share price.

It seems the board are aware of the strengths of the business, and PE will have to stump up more to get the deal over the line.

In this case, the bloated cost structure makes it an even more attractive target, since it's easy low hanging fruit to strip out those costs.

There are very few quality companies in the ftse. I suspect it may be a morrisons situation where the winning bid is significantly above the initial offer.

Agreed Lomax. And looking back 2-3 years on the chart, people will mentally have this pegged as a share price in that area with the recent lower levels being an unusual blip. Coupled with the long-term founder owners, an offer needs to be way way higher than the derisory one suggested

Roughly £9.60 by 3rd June puts us back in FTSE100. That should push Share Price back above £10. Lets hope!

To be honest being in the FTSE 100 doesn't seem so important at the moment. When we were in it the share price carried on drifting downwards - I think trackers hold a proportion similar to the weighting of the index, so as the HL share price fell they would all have been reducing their holdings as HL made up a smaller and smaller proportion of the FTSE 100 market cap as a whole.

From a charting point of view the recent intra-day high of 844.5p means we failed to get a daily close above the 841.75p resistance level (62% Fibonacci retracement of the 944p to 676.5p down move). Support now comes in at 780p, which is the 38% Fibonacci of the 676.5p to 844.5p up move.

Clearly tomorrow's half-year results RNS will have a huge impact as to whether we head back up and test 841.75p again or move down towards 780p and lower...

Hello @evianone, I would still be a little bit cautious at this stage - I've been bitten by the HL share price too many times already over the past few years! On the charts 778.5p is a crucial resistance level (38% Fib) and an end of day close above 778.5p would be positive.

There is a risk that new business could have been weaker than expected in the 1st half - 1 July to 31 Dec, but most important will be forward guidance for the tax year end period.

HL currently make a good margin on cash, but that is coming under pressure from FCA and next move in UK rates could be down. Additionally they may reduce dealing fees at some point which could affect margins (at least in short term).

Final thing to be aware of is that US and Germany markets are currently at all time highs meaning should these begin to fall back the HL share price could suffer. Unlike the markets the HL share price is far from all time highs - but that won't stop it falling if there's a market correction.

Thanks @lomax99, a good write up from Peel Hunt, and a 'Buy' rating with a price target of 1,220p.

"Hargreaves Lansdown’s share price continues to reflect challenging market conditions, rather than the significantly higher level of profitability being delivered through interest income – which we believe is higher quality than the share price suggests,’ he said.

The business does have strong long-term prospects, which we do not believe are being fully reflected in the share price."

I get that and I have been trading HL on the peaks and troughs since I first bought in last November at 775. So even at the current share price, because I have been trading it a little I'm still slightly up even at the current share price. But I must admit that the current decline in share price has caught me out.
