On the flipside , biotech esp in the US is arguably due a bounce, and yesterday's rally was quite impressive.

The fact sheet not looking pretty. The top three are all unquoted companies, whose value may have not reflected the market falls recently. The next few quoted ones, except for the purp, all hover around the year lows.

This looks further to fall and should be in a reasonable discount to NAV, say 10% as most other closed end ITs.

Cougar,
I must correct you on your Canute reference as it is a bugbear of mine.
When Canute sat on the beach and ordered the tide to stop coming in, he did not do so because he thought he had that power. He did so to show to his court, who were flatterers, that although they said he was immensely powerful, there were things he could not do. In other words, the true moral of the story is that Canute was wise, not that he was hubristic.

there may be another way of looking at it.
NW may think that he is investing in blue sky companies, the success of which is intrinsically unknowable. Say you visit a company in Oxford that is researching a cure for a particular disease. You know that the path ahead is fraught with problems: most potential cures never become something that either works or can be commercialised. You also don't know if somebody somewhere else in the world is nearing a cure for the same disease. In other words, while you can form a view on the competence of management, you cannot sensibly evaluate how likely success is.

What you do know, however, is that some of these businesses do succeed, and when they do, they can make a huge return on seed capital.

Perhaps he took the view that he would almost be a tracker in this area: invest in virtually everything he could find at launch, knowing that picking winners would be near impossible but that some would win. Perhaps that is not the worst approach: I'm not sure many of us would have picked PURP as a clear winner, for example.

I don't know if the above is correct, I just throw it out there as an explanation for why he bought so much so quickly.

If patience is required for the portfolio, the same can be said about the patience in investing the money. Why the haste to fully invest all the money and not waiting for better entry point and better opportunities to present themselves.

>How the mighty fall.

Perhaps he thought he was infallible or could influence the market .... who was the King that sat on the beach to stop the tide coming in? However, as Patience is indeed a requirement for the portfolio of holdings in this then perhaps we can't make a final verdict for another few years yet .....

Less than sparkling reaction to Verseons results today, which is one the WPCT larger holdings. Nothing really significant in them as far as I can see, but its not a company I follow closely.

Woodford, WPCT and Northwest all get a mention in today's shareprophets podcast (the bearcast).. in case anyone here might be interested in what TW has to say about Woodford and biotechs...

Hey Liquescent Kid, you've gone very quiet about PURP, you were quite vocal when it was listed. Presumably you're not just a keyboard warrior and shorted it to the max? Remind us all how the share price is doing on that one again......

Sue me if this is wrong but IP to IPO plc was supposed to make its money from Portfolio realisations which came to a grand total of.... £600,000 (2014: GBP9.7m) Rolling it in.

The most significant contributors to unrealised gains on the revaluation
of investments comprised none other than.....
Oxwoodford Nanporne Technologies Limited GBP50.4m (of total 115.4m)

Votiem, I'm sorry I had to expose your rather ambitious aspiration to be a pump and dump merchant. After all, these ADVFN threads are full of small private punters who believe that they can move the market by their ramping, suddenly sell out, then try to act as if they have been masters of the universe. I'm surprised, though, to see you have the brass neck to repeatedly support exactly the same kind of attempt by LK, (even though it's in the opposite direction) who is clearly also a rather unsuccessful small investor with an axe to grind.

Great stuff LK. Can't wait for Dr BioSmug et al to reveal if they're all still happy to be patient. And where are you, KPO115? Waiting for your tuppence worth as well.

But surely Oxford nanopore's value as a company will have taken a hit because of this legal suit ? Publicly listed biotechs do see a hit to their share price when dominant competitors take this kind of action. How often are the private holdings in WPCT updated in terms of value ?

hxxps://www.technologyreview.com/s/600887/with-patent-suit-illumina-looks-to-tame-emerging-british-rival-oxford-nanopore/

From a few other articles it appears that illumina is doing this on spurious grounds as it sees it as a threat.

Interesting to see the Illumina timing given there is a chance of an IPO for Ox Nano and Ox Nano then having access to more capital still.

Hasn't caused too much (any) of a wobble in listed holders of Ox Nano and smart money normally moves first and quick so would expect IPO and WPCT to show it or even announce if it was to be considered a material event?

Yawn.

Nobody's taking any notice of your garbled rubbish. Just look at the chart, idiot.
