04/4/2010 19:19 | from wolfson website Edinburgh, UK, 30th March 2010 Wolfson Microelectronics plc has announced that ZiiLABS, the cutting-edge media processor and platforms company, has selected its WM8352, a world-leading power management IC with integrated stereo codec, for inclusion on its ZMS-08 System Module and Zii Development Kit. The Zii Development Kit is a universal hardware and software platform for the evaluation and rapid development of handheld and embedded products based on the ZiiLABS ZMS media-rich applications processor family. As part of Wolfson's successful portfolio of power management solutions, the WM8352 features a power management subsystem and an integrated high fidelity audio codec, which delivers high performance audio, significantly reduced power consumption and extended battery life, all at a reduced system cost. As well as reducing manufacturing complexities and time-to-market, the WM8352 also delivers savings of up to 25 percent on the device bill of materials (BOM) and up to 50 percent on the board footprint. Last year, Wolfson announced that its WM8350, a stereo codec with integrated power management, was selected by ZiiLABS for inclusion on both its ZMS-05 System Module for embedded devices and its Zii EGG StemCell Computer, the first handheld Plaszma platform. Dr Jess Brown, Power Management Product Line Manager at Wolfson, said: "We are delighted to extend our working relationship with ZiiLABS through their ZMS-08 System Module and new Zii Development Kit. "ZiiLABS' selection of the WM8352 for inclusion on the ZMS-08 System Module, having previously selected the WM8350 for the ZMS-05 System Module and Zii EGG StemCell Computer, reinforces Wolfson's position as a world-leading provider of innovative solutions for some of the world's most advanced applications and processors." The ZiiLABS ZMS-08 is a flexible, media-rich application processor that delivers Blu-ray quality 1080p video, 3D graphics and multimedia capabilities within a low-power environment. The ZMS-08 is a complete System on Chip (SoC) solution for driving the next generation of media-rich portable and embedded products including connected TV devices, portable media players, mobile internet tablets, smart phones and video conferencing systems. The single chip solution is capable of full H.264 HD 1080p video playback, 720p video conferencing, 1080p encode, OpenGL® ES 2.0, Xtreme Fidelity X-Fi Audio and 1GHz ARM® Cortex application acceleration. "We selected the WM8352 because of Wolfson's world-class expertise in audio and power management mixed-signal design and the excellent application support they have provided throughout the project", comments Tim Lewis, Marketing Director at ZiiLABS. "The WM8352 and ZMS-08 processor form a powerful combination that will help designers differentiate their products, shorten system design times and reduce the requirement for additional components." steady flow of better news this year .......... | pjw956

15/3/2010 10:21 | Boa, your questions are all valid, no doubt. Difficulty is always to penetrate the complexity of the good, bad and ugly at any given time. So I watch the chart instead. The recent rises would suggest that analysts' fundamentally gloomy analysis was way off the mark. But questions like yours always serve to point out the risks. | brucie5
15/3/2010 08:42 | While I agree the chart looks promising and also their noise cancellation chip is a possible winner in its field, I cannot see that the fundamentals yet lead one to expect much further share price progress from here. Although there is some advantage to be gained from the weak (and soon to be weaker) pound in converting profit, I would expect any increased dollar (accounting currency) income to be largely swallowed up in increased manufacturing cost with only a modest proportion feeding through to margin. Does the recent share price buoyancy arise rather from the possibility of a predator or consolidator appearing on the scene? | boadicea

11/2/2010 07:04 | No less than 3 new product announcements popped up on the Wlf site y'day. They seem to be getting more bullish in approach compared to past generally neutral/dry product announcements and the second extracted below is essentially confirming captured custom for audio amps: Wolfson introduces a mass-market noise cancelling stereo headset reference solution incorporating its unique myZone ANC technology "...Delivering world-leading noise cancelling technology at a competitive cost, this headset enables millions of consumers worldwide to experience Wolfson's unique ANC technology..." Wolfson brings its world class sound to the masses with two new audio amplifiers "...Wolfson Microelectronics (LSE:WLF.L) is bringing its 25 years of world-leading semiconductor expertise to the masses with the news that two of its new cost effective audio amplifiers will be integrated into millions of mobile phones in 2010." "...We are delighted that the benefits of the WM9090 and the WM9010 are being recognised by some of the world's leading mobile phone manufacturers, and that millions of consumers will experience the latest Wolfson-quality audio..." Also a further broker upgrade: Wolfson Micro raised to hold from sell at RBS, TP 140p up from 97p By BFN News | 12:34 PM | Wednesday 10 February, 2010 Wolfson Mic Ord 0.1p (WLF) While Wolfson delivered 4Q09 results that were in-line with consensus, says RBS, management impressed with its sound strategy for revenue growth in FY10. 'This growth should be achieved through the record level of design-ins and be assisted by higher-grossing hub solutions, in our view.' Story provided by Business Financial Newswire | fabzzz
10/2/2010 01:18 | Only just picked up this revelation from the paper... tut tut! Referring to being dropped by Apple, finance director Mark Cubitt yesterday told analysts that the design loss came "after we missed a deadline". After being dropped by Apple a fact that Wolfson failed to reveal to the City until weeks later Wolfson's former chief executive Dave Shrigley said the company had not been told why it was dropped. Cubitt indicated Wolfson's problems stemmed from over-complication: "The danger with any engineering is you can over-engineer, but it doesn't matter how good your product is, if you've missed the date, you've missed the date." Chief executive Mike Hickey, who joined a year ago, said the design side of the business despite maintaining high quality had become "constipated" in recent years. He said: "The company added power management (capabilities], it added two acquisitions, and it all just crunched a bit." Yesterday Wolfson declared that the problems were behind it, with the engineering unit split into teams focusing on single product lines, and under pressure to meet schedules. | nod
