I first visited local schools 15 years ago and found them uniformly glum, neglected and harsh. Following massive investment, over the past 10 years newly built schools are springing up everywhere. Brightly painted to make them more child friendly, well equipped and all built around central green areas, the children are visibly more enthusiastic and academic expectations are high. I was surprised that the UK media was surprised that Vietnam outperformed the UK in the global PISA tests last year.

Andy,
Both economic and political risk have risen in the UK, US and Italy. Whilst Vietnam and for that matter China are comparatively areas of political stability and economic growth. However Vietnam is now much more competitive than China with more growth potential. Couple that with a young dynamic and importantly well educated Vietnamese population 50% under the age of 30 compared to China’s ageing population following the one child policy. Couple that again with Vietnam attracting large inward investment from across Asia
Japan, South Korea Etc., with rising economic growth, company profits and consumer spending you have the perfect dynamic for investment

Totally agree corguv. It is interesting to compare attitudes to education and working hard. Where the West is and will pay the price of a pervasive cool not to learn attitude in our schools, Asia will reap the benefits of an inherent determination to learn and succeed. There is political risk, but with a Socialist government closing in on power in the UK, the risks are arguably greater in the UK.

Looking now and at the future. There are increasing problems in the UK, US and now Italy which are imo symptomatic of deeper underlying economic and political faults.
Asia is the strongest growing part of the world and within that if you analyse the the potential growth prospects and stability I think Vietnam is outstanding.

That is a bigger percentage than me at the moment. Although given the economic attractions of the country, that are universally acknowledged, buyers are clearly going to be more aggressive than sellers at this stage. Other than banking profits, who is going to sell?

So, into the FTSE250!

Doubled up. Was going to anyway but the prospect of index buying tipped me over the edge.

That’s quite a % of your portfolio corguv. I’ve dipped my toe in here , about 4.5 % of portfolio as a long term buy. If this progresses I’ll look to add up to 10% , maybe consider VEIL as part of that.

Indeed that is Vietnam.

VOF shares were purchased heavily after the close on Friday.

The Vnindex thus far today is up against the global trend.

Very content to hold a third of our portfolio here.

No doubting the prospects for Vietnam and
thus the outlook for VOF and VEIL are strong.
I hold both but am heavier weighted in VOF
than VEIL. VOF has an excellent record, both have a discount to NAV at around 16-17% and undervalued. VOF now pays a twice yearly dividend currently 2.08% annually (Bloomberg) like VOF’s increased exposure
to PE investments (upto 20% of portfolio) mainly in the consumer and infrastructure sectors.
Either way Vietnam is booming, rising GDP, inward investment and exports, Increasing disposable incomes and consumption.

Great thanks, been adding some VEIL at a bargain 16% discount to NAV.

Agree Corguv, I was speaking to the area manager of a construction company recently whose company builds giant factories. He was sent here to open a new market for the company. His target was to secure x amount (can't recall the exact figures) in the first year. His company secured 6x in the first three months and he said so many global companies are moving here they have had to turn work down. There will be bumps, but their investment in education and the strong study and work hard ethic will eventually drive Vietnam past their neighbours. My only concern is that VEIL has performed better during the recent correction and I will split my investment between the two.

Envious. Only get to visit on business and holidays. Great future 90 Million with s median age around 30 years old, education now starting to surpass much of the West, entrepenurial and striving for a better future and as you say Andy a long way to go to catch up to the likes of Thailand.
But moving fast. For me an outstanding frontier market and the City is beginning to get it.

Having lived here 15 years the change has been phenomenal and most of it in recent years. It has a long way to go to catch up with Thailand, but the trajectory is one way and their long term investment in quality education impressive. As I always say if the City could see what I see every day, these would be significantly higher.

Indeed Andy at the close Vnindex closed up 3.77% on the day. Have been adding to VOF holding myself for some time and will continue to do so.
Strong economic indicators, high GDP growth, growing exports and reserves, increasing company profits and cash flow. Rising dividend yields. A young vibrant and growing country. What is not to like.

Building holding in VOF for growth and now dividends.

15% seems about right for VOF spread across all sectors of Vietnam and a substantial size Investment Trust with better prospects than many.

Hanoi up 2.8% and HCMC up 1.5% at the open. I'm actually hoping for further weakness so that I can add more at even better prices.Vietnam is now 6% of my portfolio and I am hoping to gradually increase it to 15%.
