Nice 2 page write up in Money Week today on Vietnam. Its basically a 2 page write up on VOF. :-)

VOF is also tipped on there round table review with Vietnam as one of there favourite markets for the year ahead.

Without copying the article they are saying that the reason VOF has 9% in cash is because of all the new issues coming to the market which they want to participate in.

Partly recent announcement by VOF of a twice yearly dividend payment to try to close the gap between the net asset value and the discounted share price ? The share price is still around 19% below VOF’s Vietnam holdings and this might narrow ?

Also down to rising stock values in Vietnam stock exchanges with both good company results and good economic news. and rising GDP growth.

Strong foreign investment in Vietnam now.

Then there is the Asia background which is also on an uptrend.

Seems to be re-rating, has it been tipped somewhere, or has Vietnam become flavour of the month for IIs?

VOF was established in 2003 and now has total assets of £812million. The largest Investment Trust with a widespread and diverse spread across listed and unlisted companies spread across the Vietnamese economy.
VOF’s growth is accelerating 84.37% over 5 years 24.82% over 1 year 14.77% over 3 months and 5.8% in the last full week of trading (source HL).
Currently 348p to buy with a nett asset value of 409.5p well discounted and off most PI’s radar.
65% of the shares are held by Institutions such as HSBC and Credit Suisse.
VOF is Guernsey Registered and no stamp duty.

There is masses of information available on VOF. It is a rated Investment Trust.

It looks like there are 2 other Vietnam funds (VNI and VNL) managed by the same fund manager. One seems to have been wound up recently and the other has just paid out 30% of its assets as cash. While that doesn't necessarily reflect badly on VOF, I will want to do more research before investing.

VIetnam is a rapidly growing frontier market and is off the radar for many investors, it will soon achieve emerging market status and is expected to sign a free trade agreement with Europe in coming months, both events should rerate investors’ interest. GDP growth is now running at 7% and the economy is strengthening.
For me the recent arrival of a twice yearly dividend on VOF shares has changed VOF from a growth stock to a growth and dividend stock and over 2017 I more than doubled my VOF holding.
A special market and a special stock a bit lacking in recognition but not in growth.

The only reason there's a discount is that it's based out here in Vietnam, far from the eyes of the City. The reality is, if they could see what I see living here, or put it another way they were geographically closer, they would be trading at a premium.

Nice melt-up into year end although with the VN Index up almost 50% this year I was hoping for something higher. Does anyone know of any ETFs covering Vietnam?

Agree entirely with that andj. Been in for some time and add on any dips in VOF. The Vietnamese economy is strong and last quarter GDP accelerated. The population is hardworking with a desire to get on and be successful with a large proportion of enthusiastic younger people.
Spent some months in Vietnam and was so impressed by the entrepreneurial spirit.

As a long term resident of Vietnam, I rate these and VEIL the best buys on the market. Vietnam is only just beginning to take off. Vietnam has a young, educated and hard working population. It is a safe and vibrant place to live and the pace of change is incredible. As an example, ten years ago the city centre, D1, would be deserted except for a few ex pats on weekend nights. Now it is full of hundreds of bars and restaurants that are absolutely packed. And the list grows every week. An excellent buy, I keep waiting for a correction to buy in, but there's no sign of that!

Just to carry on from what zcaprd7 is saying is that Jardine Matheson are taking a 10% stake in dairy giant Vinamilk, which makes up just over 12% of our holdings.

Just read that article in Money Week, looks positive for Vietnam going forward.

My own view is the same as D Stevenson's in that there will be a real positive movement in Vietnam when it changes from Frontier to Emerging market status and this will open the floodgates to billions in foreign investment capital. KT.
