14/3/2022 21:18 | Prometal invests 12 billion FCFA in the construction of a production plant of 600,000 gas cylinders per year Comments 0 - Monday, 14 March 2022 07:21 (Business in Cameroon) - Since November 2021, the company Prometal, the leader in the rebar market in Central Africa, has launched in the city of Douala, the Cameroonian economic capital, the construction works of its 5th plant , which will will produce domestic gas cylinders. “ Two other projects are annexed to this factory, in particular the manufacture of wheelbarrows and metal frames ”, specifies a source close to the file. Investment of a total amount of 12 billion FCFA, supported by a banking consortium in which we find BGFI Cameroon and CCA Bank, the plant should be commissioned in July 2022. This industrial production unit, which will make it possible to create 250 direct jobs, will then put on the Cameroonian and sub-regional market some 600,000 bottles of domestic gas each year, we learn. “ Cameroon currently imports around 450,000 to 500,000 cylinders of domestic gas per year, for an amount of around 8 billion FCFA. At full capacity, this plant should allow the country to no longer depend on imports and to export up to 100,000 bottles of domestic gas per year. This should not only allow the Cameroonian metallurgical industry to shine on the African market, in the context of the African Continental Free Trade Area (Zlecaf), but also reduce the country's trade balance deficit ,” explains an internal company source. According to the promoters, this plant will market gas cylinders to international standards, while respecting the Cameroonian standard. This should contribute to reducing the tragedies experienced in Cameroonian households, because of old gas cylinders that have become defective. Indeed, according to a joint study carried out in 2011 by the Department of Metrology and Consumer Protection of the Ministry of Commerce and the Hydrocarbon Price Stabilization Fund (CSPH), "70% of domestic gas cylinders in circulation in the country are defective” . Import-substitution This observation had led the Cameroonian government to grant, from 2017, certain tax facilities to marketers for the renewal of the country's gas cylinder stock, by means of massive imports that have often contributed to reducing Cameroon's foreign exchange reserves. Prometal's offer not only reverses this trend by making local products available, but also, and above all, reinforces the import-substitution policy advocated for several years by the Cameroonian government. The gas cylinder factory under construction in Douala is the second industrial production unit that Prometal has set up in the space of 3 years . We remember that at the end of 2018, this company launched the construction of Prometal 4, presented as the most modern and diversified iron processing plant in sub-Saharan Africa. Good sources, this factory quietly entered production in the last quarter of 2021 and will soon be officially inaugurated. “ All the diligences are being done. We are waiting for feedback to set the date of the inauguration , ”blows a source familiar with the matter. As a reminder, Prometal 4 will have the particularity of allowing the marketing of new products, which have so far been imported by most African countries. These include beams, angles, flat bars and wire rods, which are intermediate products used to manufacture nails, smooth bars and screws. According to metallurgy experts, thanks to Prometal 4 and the aforementioned new products, Cameroon's trade balance deficit on iron-based building materials should be reduced by 50%. Brice R.
