To me the business looks strong but the cost of living and inflation could be a dampener. As usual I bought at the top so have some catching up to do.

Old enough to remember car dealerships surviving 15 percent interest rates. Under 1pc won't impact VTU meaningfully, sunshine. One look at their balance sheet compared to others in the sector will leave any shorters crying into their chosen beverage before long imho.

Marshall Motor share sale proceeds from the recent takeover should logically be heading our way very soon!

Yep, Toyota is not a car that I'd buy but the truth is they are going to replace the french market in the uk.

Their re-branded models are extremly popular here, where once they were just very dour now they have appeal.

It's not just that, its the tariff that the EU put on imported cars (28% from memory). Never mind the politics (I dont do politics) the fact is that when i read the speadsheet prior to brexit, the one thing that struck me is just how advantage it was for Germany and Itlay to levy an added 28% to the Japanese imports. Simply put the only reason to buy french was they were 28% lower than the real price!

So, in short Toyota is the car that you will see more and more of in the coming few years. You wanna be a dealer of that (and not Citroen etc.)

Award of franchise meaning new Toyota dealerships in West of Scotland, first up and running in April. Nice RNS.

I am not shorting this stock , but investors should be wary if dealerships have to mark down stock heavily ( simply because the competition does ).

Just like housing, the downtown could be swift if confidence is lost.

This is what I posted back in Dec on the CAMB thread, as the boss attempted (and won), the battle to take it private.

Now over to the FT. ( my personal view ).

The most valid point being that it’s normally a low margin high cost business.

It will only take a rise in interest rates to kill the show dead, and bust most of the players in the market.

I would go so far as to say it’s 50/50 that in 2 years time the offer costs HIM MR Lavery, (not today’s shareholders who accept it,) dear. !!

Not exactly a sector short of corporate activity, vertu is the only large quoted group left effectively

IMO the possible upgrade to the 2021/2 figures is not the main issue - although I suspect if there isn't one the share price will fall given the current market we find ourselves in.

The key is some sort of indication of 2022/23 profitability. Analyst consensus has this falling off a cliff - over 50% - with a forward PER of over 10. Now that is historically expensive for a car retailer. I, and I suspect a lot of other people, don't believe that will happen but this will probably move sideways until there is clarity on this.

Thanks undervalued, adds fuel to my expectation of a further upgrade to 2021 profits. And probably a first upgrade for 2022 numbers :)

Thanks for that. Shared the link onto the MW board.
And no wonder the bod buying up shares like no tomorrow.
Still waiting for the corresponding rise in VTU's share price though!!!

Nice one undervalued! With year end at end of Feb, I'd expect another update, probably first few days of March. And there's no reason to think there mightn't be another nudge up in profits. At the none month point, figure given was 'not less than 70 million', for FY.

With market conditions unchanged as far as I can see, infact according to a poster elsewhere new car production in December was lowest month since 1956, so if anything even more favourable, I'd almost be surprised if no upgrade.

Yes purple you did well to call a short term top, but with the enviable balance sheet and tangible nav around the share price, I expect further improvement in 2022. I still don't see any reason for fantastic market conditions to change in the coming months either.

Seeing as markets look forward I called this the peak and sold at 73p recently. Would buy back in around 50p but so far as I see all the good news is baked in, and we only have the less rosy future to look forward to.

So, undervalued, (and you're right of course, by a mile) maybe it's a case that you should be buying VTU, rather than us buying Lookers - just a thought! :)

if you are just looking at the debt levels VTU is the cheapest (least indebted) out of PDG and LOOK and VTU.

By quite a bit actually

Brucie .. why not buy Lookers as well.

Because I'm very largely into dividend income atm. VTU takes my average down already!

Clean balance sheet perhaps, Brucie, tnav incredibly, around shareprice, constantly beating broker forecasts - and none of the baggage others in the sector have? Other than that... :)

VTU passes more screens on stocko, and marginally smaller mcap. Smaller dividend though. Trying to remind myself why I bought this and not that...

Lookers gone ballistic. No apparent news, but if it's a bid, don't think we'll be involved or surely the buyback would have been suspended by now.
