From Pre Close trading update 3rd March:-
"March is the most important month for the profitability of the UK automotive sector as a consequence of the registration plate change and its impact on both new vehicle demand and the seasonality of servicing.
The board is pleased to report that the like-for-like private new car order-take for March is currently running ahead of last year's levels. Whilst there is clearly significant work to do during the month to deliver a strong March performance, this order-take level gives the board significant confidence".

As the end of Q1 approaches the Motor Retailers will be chasing registrations to achieve or over achieve their quarterly manufacturer targets and maximise volume bonus target earnings.
Manufacturers will be offering bulk registration deals to Retailers to out do each other & in the first instance Manufacturers usually target their best performing Retailers with such opportunities.
For buyers, generally the last weeks of Q1 & Q3 are the best time to buy a new car to get the best deal.
VTU stated their orders going in to March were ahead of last year so I'm sure they will be well placed to take advantage of the above scenario.

Certainly planning some sells before end of tax year but in most cases will be buying back later to establish a higher base cost. Not sure if PI's selling small lots has much effect to be honest.

I've sold up some shares today for CGT purposes (14k). I wonder how many others do the same at this time of the year? It might explain why we havent pushed on into the results

another RNS out today bodes well

The Board of Cambria, the franchised motor retailer, is pleased to announce that it expects the Group's results for the six months to 28 February 2014, which will be issued on 13 May 2014, to be significantly ahead of the prior year and that it views the outlook for the remainder of the financial year with confidence.

Extremely disappointed with todays volume. I was hoping for something approaching 10m to get through the 60-70p sellers. Results are seriously good. We are ahead of significantly ahead and March looking promising.

Great update. Bad day to release the news!
Still, perhaps people pulling their funds out of the stocks they perceive may be adversely affected by the Ukraine issue might see VTU as a better option & end up investing here.

Cashstrapped – Sorry, it seems I must have misunderstood the point of your query. Unfortunately, not sure my favourite sectors would be of much help to you at the moment, as my few current holdings are AIM, very speculative and not sector-specific.
As I tried to explain, I find the overall market a bit febrile at present and before committing capital I want to hold some cash and mostly watch over the next few weeks to see which way the the general market trend wants to move.
Apologies if mistaken, but from your post I'm not sure whether you have worked out yet where to find best sector data. FWIW, to follow up the sector data you were querying, click on Toplists at the top of this page, look down the Free Top Lists box on the left and click Indices List you will find the codes for each index. Click on the code for the sector you want and you will get the sector chart and you can then decide for yourself whether that sector is rising well or not. There are lists available on various sites which claim to rank sectors/indices in some sort of recent success order but its unlikely that order is anything but history. Much better to look at each up to date sector chart yourself and try to guesstimate its future trend.
As a matter of general interest, I find it very useful to attempt to follow only the currently strongest stock in the currently strongest sector and index. That is, three charts per stock. Not easy, but highly lucrative when you manage to pull it off. As a mainly momentum trader I strongly believe the Trend is your Friend and so I try hard to align as many trends as possible.
Anyway, best of luck, apologies to others for o/t, pete

The financial year ended on 28th Feb. Last year VTU issued a trading statement the following day, so I believe we may see a statement on Monday.

Hi I was interested to see if you were picking individuals from a sector that you thought was due to rise.
Yes THT for example has been great but as you say there has been drop on good results theme recently. I see that CR thinks a top could be closehappening whereas the press (IC for eg) are still calling more highs. I think its a bit soon to sell in may but imagine I will suffer when the drop comes sooner!

ATB and good luck with your holds.
