23/2/2004 09:49 | SINGAPORE (AFX-ASIA) - Demand for commercial aircraft in the Asia Pacific region is expected to reach 4,000 between now and 2020, including more than 2,100 widebodied planes, a European aviation official said. Philippe Camus, co-chairman of the European Aeronautic, Defence and Space Company (EADS), gave the figures at a news conference on the eve of the 2004 Asian Aerospace which kicks off here tomorrow. "The demand for widebody airlines in the Asia-Pacific between now and 2020 is estimated at over 2,100," said Camus, who is also chairman of the French Aerospace Industry Association, GIFAS. Including smaller commercial planes, the figure could go as high as 4,000 aircraft. GIFAS is strongly represented at the AsianAerospace event with 30 companies. The French Air Force will be participating in daily flying displays to showcase its Mirage 2000 RDIs and the Rafale multi-role fighter. The Rafale is among three warplanes shortlisted by Singapore to replace its current plans in a deal for 20 jets expected to be worth more than 1 bln usd. The two others on the shortlist are Boeing's F-15E Strike Eagle and Eurofighter's Typhoon. Camus did not give a market value for the 4,000 commercial aircraft. However, the cheapest plane in the stable of European aircraft maker Airbus is around 45 mln usd, while the most expensive has a catalogue price of 286 mln usd. He said more than 570 Airbus airliners are in service with 40 Asia Pacific carriers, including 48 delivered last year. Singapore Airlines (SIA) will be the first carrier in the world to take delivery of the A-380 super jumbo jet, the world's biggest commercial plane, which rolls out in early 2006. SIA was also the first in the Asia Pacific to put into service the A340-500 very long-range aircraft, which made the world's longest non-stop commercial flight between Singapore and Los Angeles this month lasting 14 hours and 42 minutes. SIA plans to break this record in June when it will launch a Singapore-New York non-stop service lasting 18 hours, also using the A340-500. mba/bh/bmm/js Asia-air-planes-mark AFP | ![]() maywillow | |

10/12/2003 09:11 | LONDON (AFX) - Hampson Industries PLC said it has signed a long term deal with Eclipse Aviation Corp of the US for the manufacture and supply of the empennage assembly for the revolutionary Eclipse 500 jet aircraft. The contract has an estimated total value of about 380 mln usd. The agreement represents the largest single contract ever awarded to Hampson and is line with the group's strategy of focussing on higher value-added activities in growth sectors. Under the contract, Hampson's Aerospace Fabrications & Assemblies Division will assemble the complete empennage structure of the aircraft from detailed component and large stretch-formed parts manufactured substantially within its own facilities. Completed assemblies will then be delivered direct to Eclipse Aviation's manufacturing facilities in Albuquerque, New Mexico, US, on a just-in-time basis. The manufacturing strategy includes using the principles of single piece flow, coupled with six sigma quality. rn | ![]() maywillow |
