12/10/2003 09:28 | Agreed, sad day. I was on the Poyle (trading estate at the end of 27L)last week when it took off directly over me. The sight (and sound!) of the 4 afterburners of the Olympus' as they powered the Concorde airframe into the air will not be forgotten. | tiraider

06/10/2003 12:54 | ORLANDO, Fla (AFX) - Engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce PLC said 2003 and 2004 will be trough years for business jet deliveries, with a slow upturn starting in 2005. These forecasts for the business jet market mirrow the group's expectations for the civil engine market as a whole. Rolls-Royce forecasts a decrease in deliveries in 2003 and 2004 relative to 2002 as a result of slow economic growth and continued market uncertainty. A study by the group found that 2003 deliveries will likely total 500 units, down 25 pct from 2002 and 35 pct lower than 2001. Deliveries in 2004 will be similar to the totals for 2003. "Our analysis of the market shows a wave of business jet retirements in the next 10 to 20 years that will need to be replaced, especially in the light- to medium-aircraft categories. Our data shows that 25 pct of the business jet fleet is 26 years of age or older and 40 pct of the fleet is 20 years of age or older, which shows that as many as 5,000 aircraft will need to be replaced over the forecast period," said Ian Aitken, president of Rolls-Royce's corporate aircraft business in remarks at the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) Annual Meeting & Convention. Despite these decreases over the 2003-2004 period, the company said it expects to maintain its leading market position. Rolls-Royce forecasts the market will demand 6,520 aircraft valued at 24 bln usd between 2003-2012 and sees 13,950 aircraft deliveries valued at 54 bln usd in the next 20 years. anna.boekstegen@afxn acb/ak | maywillow

01/10/2003 17:53 | BRASILIA (AFX) - The government has resumed negotiations with aircraft makers, including the Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica/Dassault Aviation and the Saab AB/BAE Systems PLC consortia, to buy 14 to 15 fighter jets, a defence ministry spokeswoman said. The Brazilian government announced at the beginning of the year that an order for fighter jets estimated at 760 mln usd had been postponed by at least one year, saying it wanted to focus its cash reserves on battling poverty. Lockheed Martin Corp, Russia's Rac-Mig and the Avibras-Rosoboronexp The spokeswoman said that the companies have been contacted to discuss the terms of the offers, and a meeting will take place tomorrow. She noted that the acquisition of the jets could be financed with loans rather than with funds from the budget. She also stressed that the contract will be awarded based on the local investments committed by the company, and not only on the bid itself. According to financial daily Gazeta Mercantil, which cited sources close to the matter, the defence ministry wants the bidders to update their offers, include a risk assessment, and detail the offset projects -- which cover mainly the transfer of technology and jobs to be created. Gazeta Mercantil quoted Saab/BAE's Gripen vice-president, Erik Hjelm, as saying that the offer made is valid until 2004, and will not be changed. "We will wait for the meeting to see what the FAB (Brazilian air force) proposes," Hjelm said. Separately, daily Correio Braziliense reported yesterday that part of the government is lobbying in favour of the Embraer/Dassault consortium, which also includes Thales and Snecma. 16/7/2003 23:46 | FRANKFURT (AFX) - German airline Lufthansa AG and three of its Star Alliance partners are inviting aircraft manufacturers to compete for a multi-billion euro order to build up to 200 brand new regional jets for the carriers, a Star Alliance spokesman said. "200 is about the right number," Star Alliance spokesman Horst Findeisen said, partially confirming a report to that effect in the regional daily Tagesspiegel. The newspaper said the airlines -- Lufthansa, Air Canada, Scandinavian Airlines Systems and Austrian Airlines -- were inviting tenders for an order worth between 7-8 bln uds (6.2-7.1 bln eur) to build a brand new type of regional jet. But Findeisen refused to confirm the figure. Tagesspiegel said the carriers intended to place a firm order for 100 brand new 100-seater regional jets and hold an option for 100 more later. Star Alliance spokesman Findeisen confirmed that the manufacturers concerned were Canadian group Bombardier, Brazilian firm Embraer, and the two world leaders Airbus and Boeing. The Star Alliance partners had already announced in May that they were teaming up to negotiate lower prices for the aircraft they purchase from manufacturers. A decision was expected by the end of this year, Tagesspiegel said. spm/wai/bam | maywillow |
